Okay guys, for real face. "Other" is an ADJECTIVE. That means it needs a NOUN to modify. If there is no noun, you're probably doing it wrong. "He gazed lovingly at the other" IS WRONG WRONG WRONG. He can gaze lovingly at other men, other cats, other NOUNS, but there has to be a NOUN. Period. I realize this is probably a misguided attempt to avoid epithets but frankly, BRING THEM ON IF THIS IS WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. JFC. This is a construction that should seriously be banished. It makes me absolutely nuts to read it.
Common errors in English is a great resource. It doesn't contain a chastisement for "other" but it wasn't written for fandom, either.
