Memories: Writer's Block Q & A

Jun 23, 2010 00:26

Alright, so I'm pretty sure anyone reading this will probably know the answer to this question already, because they either 1. know me or 2. are my roommate.  So far, the most memorable event of my life was being able to go to Oxford, England to study abroad for 6 weeks last summer.  This may not be the highest achievement I have ever reached, but when I read this question, Oxford immediately popped into my head.
I had been wanting to go to England since I was small.  My grandmother was born there, and raised mostly there, and only left because she met my grandfather (who was a U.S. soldier posted in London during WWII) and got married.  Most of my grandmother's family is still there, and all of her remaining siblings live there.  I have grown up hearing stories about England and my great aunts and uncle and their families.  British history entrances me.  There is just so much more of it than American history, and plus I typically find things more interesting when they haven't been drilled into my head since elementary school, so I thought that being able to actually see and walk around the places I'd read and learned about on my own would be a fantastic experience. I wasn't wrong. :)

One of the reasons I think this experience was so special was because I was able to go to a completely new continent, and was able to discover things about it for 6 weeks.  No week-long vacation would ever have given me that much freedom to just explore.  I was able to learn a lot from the teachers I took classes with, and I was able to take advantage of every trip to every place I wanted to go--Stonehenge, Windsor, Stratford.  It was special because I was able to fulfill a long-time dream of mine in a way that I had never expected.  I would have just been grateful for a week--or a day, even--in England, but I was able to live there for a month and a half.  I think it was also special because it was a process to get there.  I was stressed and worried about everything, but in the end, everything worked out the way it was supposed to and I was able to go on the trip of a lifetime.

As for topping this experience, it's hard to say.  I would like to have an experience that would top it, and my hopes for what I will do in my future expect to top it, but I don't know.  I'll let you know when I do. ;)
