Was it a Raspberry Cider or the Raspberry fruit beer? I'm thinking it was the fruit beer, since I think the only cider that Samuel Smith makes is an apple cider (which is delicious BTW) and because ciders don't have hops (there are exceptions, but they call themselves hopped cider). The other important distinction is that a fruit beer is made with malt as well as fruit, since it is a true beer, whereas a cider is only fruit juices. Fruit beers are usually heavier, whereas ciders tend to be lighter and crisper.
Mike's is all just malt beverage, which is to say fermented grains without hops so no wories there, but it's not exactly "beer" either :-).
Anyway, if you want to develop a liking for hops, try brewing some beer sometime! I used to hate hops, but once you learn to appreciate them, and what they can bring to a beer it really changes the way you taste beer.
