18, 19, and 20 December 2010 - Three-fer Part Two

Dec 21, 2010 01:54

Yeah, yeah. I took a day-off from Idioting. Like I said, I'm really not interested in anything else. After the fiasco at Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark tonight, I doubt I'll see a show that endangers actors so freaking much.  (Once again, BBAJ does not interest me.  I apologize if that offends you and feel free to think I'm an idiot.  If you like it, good for you.  If you want lotto help, I'll be there.)  And besides, my budget stops at $30/ticket so I don't have a lot of choices given my rotten luck at lotto.

The most interesting thing about the December 18th show was what I found out after, as I already blogged about here.  And I finally saw Gerard!Theo.  So cute standing on top of that bus.  :)  I kept on missing him.  And I paid $37 for my ticket -- that hurt me so bad.  LOL.  I had an S101 seat but ended up at D16 by "Holiday".

19 December 2010 was my mom's birthday.  Since she was not here, I watched again in her honor -- really, as if I needed an occasion.  And I won lotto!  For the first time.  EVER.  And of course, almost everybody who lotto'd won.  Just my fucking luck, or lack thereof.  It was cool, though.  I was sitting beside Jeanna de Waal's parents.  Hee!  It was adorable to see them watch their daughter.  (Kind of awkward during the Heather/Will make out scenes though haha.)  They were so into the show, cheering even when Jeanna wasn't in the scene.

20 December 2010 -- I wasn't supposed to go but when I heard it's going to be Leslieshername and Favorite Ben, I was so in.  So I got student rush P109.  When I sat down and flipped through the playbill, I got more what I bargained for.

VANHUGHES!Johnny.  Leslieshername.  Favorite Ben.  Corbin!Alysha.  Lorin!Leslie.  Omar!Wallace.

I almost SCREAMED when I saw that it was also a VANHUGHES!Johnny night.  I might have squee'd a little bit.  The guys beside me certainly had no clue why.

Everyone, and I seriously mean EVERYONE, was vocally on point.  I missed the natural voice being used in Favorite Son's line in "Before the Lobotomy".  JHenz used to do that but Wallace uses the falsetto.  Ben went the JHenz way and I loved it.  His FS montage was hilarious!  Especially the swimmer part?  OMG, cracking up so bad.

Corbin did not go overboard with the TMTS riff so it was pretty good.  I was just talking to Sally over dinner before the show that I wanted to hear Corbin so one song instead of just one line.  I guess I got my wish.  Omar - whom I love but for some reason, not so much on the show - sounded great.  In "Lobotomy", I just... ah.  :)

During "American Idiot", I thought I was going to get Lorin!Alysha.  But then I remembered where Leslie usually stands during that song.  Idk, I don't want to sound mean but it's like she didn't know half of the choreography.  Being the dance captain/associate choreographer and all.  And if she does, she didn't give it a hundred percent.  She was getting cues from Andrew during "Rebel".  Eh, at least they got her out of that hideous see through lacy lingerie number they had her in during the club scene.  I remember seeing her months ago and she was okay.  *shrugs*  And oh, she fell over during "Lobotomy (Reprise)".  Not on purpose as if she's about to wheel Tunny out.

Leslieshername.  Okay, I seriously believe that if there is someone who is irreplaceable in this cast, it's Rebecca Naomi Jones as Whatsername.  No disrespect to the three ladies who understudy the role but nobody owns "Letterbomb" as well as RNJ does.  Leslie is my favorite dancer in the cast.  Watching her do "Holiday" as ensemble just makes it so much better.  As Whatsername, eh idk.  Her first verse in "21 Guns" was great.  "Letterbomb" was a bit weak.  She just did not have the in your face oomph like RNJ has.  But with that being said, I still like Leslie and I'm glad I saw her in another role.  And there was microphone trouble during "BoBD".  It was a Whatsername-less Boulevard.

VANHUGHES!Johnny.  VANHUGHES!Johnny.  I like JGalls, I really, truly do.  (It's hard to comment on him because he has some fucking scary and possessive fans but I'll try to be as diplomatic as possible.  Please do not take this the wrong way.  Gray areas exist, people.)  But VANHUGHES!Johnny, GDI.  I've never teared up at a Johnny scene before.  And I totally did during "Death of St. Jimmy" and it was definitely not because of St. Jimmy.

Okay, to be fair, JGalls has a better "Whatsername" and "Rebel".  It's more emotional (WHN) and during "Rebel", you can see Van is not used to it.  But I liked Van's "When It's Time" better.  Why?  Okay, personally, I think it makes sense if you sing/strum softly if someone is sleeping beside you, right?  Van's was soft and sweet and funny at the same time.

Also, his line delivery was so good.  I don't know, maybe it's because I've seen JGalls so much and also being used to him as Moritz that I became sort of immune to "his" Johnny but I prefer Van's twist on things.  Especially his "Dear Dad or God or whatever" spiel.  I like his little "What?" as Tunny and Will were joking about Brad being a literal mofo.  And his pauses as Tunny called his bullshit as to where he got the money.  Everything was so refreshing.  I JUST FUCKING LOVED VANHUGHES!JOHNNY.  I want to see it again so bad!

I should probably mention that Leslie and Van are real life girlfriend-boyfriend.  So that's sweet.  I tried not to stare too much during "Novacaine" haha.

And it wasn't just the show.  The audience, especially the people around me, were just as amusing.  I was surrounded by first-timers.  Probably the audience quote of the day is this:

Girl 1: John Gallagher, Jr. was in Spring Awakening where he earned a Tony Award.
Girl 2: But he's not here.
Girl 1: Probably moving on to greener pastures.

Heh, not cool but it hilarious.  There was an interesting family in front of me.  The son looked like Allan Hyde (aka Godric of True Blood) and kept on looking at his sister every time Stark and/or Van sings.  The sister, in the middle of "Holiday" whispered loudly to her brother and mother, "There's a TV in the shopping cart over there, Mom!" pointing to the one suspended in the air.  And the mother kept on coughing and blowing her nose every possible quiet time in the show.  The girl kept track of which song they were on, firing up her cellphone to read the playbill.  Her quote of the day was, "I like the drug dealer but I HATE his hair."  Mom liked the drug dealer too.  Godric liked the "guy with one leg".

After the show, I was happy that the older folks who watched were talking about it in excited voices.  They liked so-and-so (mostly Tony and Stark, as usual, and VAN) and found the music very entertaining.  There was a girl who took her family to the Letterbomb door panel and "lectured" how understudies worked.  And, "Oh, she (Mary) is not there anymore."  ;___;  Anyway, that's it for the understudy checklist.  I still fail but what can you do.  LOL.

PS: Theo ninja'd out of there in a car with Lea Michele.
