Marianet Amper, 11. Took her own life because of poverty.

According to the younger brother, she was already depressed and suicidal. Well, he didn't say that really... but this was what he said:

"Minsan naglalaro kami tapos ilalagay nya yung bolo sa pulso nya. Sabi pa nya iiwanan nya ako (by killing herself)." [One time, we were playing and she would put the machete near her pulse. And she would say that she'll leave me (by killing herself).]

It's very heartbreaking that it had to come to this.

I was watching ANC Crossroads yesterday, listening to the asst. secretary of some poverty commission -- saying that they have dialogues about this and that... in the communities of Loyola Heights (a somewhat upper-class community) which the president herself oversaw. And I was like, "yeah right." Might I add that she added the "president overseeing" part waaaaay after her original explanation. The program host wasn't at all impressed.

The sad part about this is the government starts doing something we can ACTUALLY FEEL AND SEE after something as big and tragic as this happens. Payatas trashslide and such... those are the only times they do something. And afterwards, after all the media attention dies down, nothing again.

The sister, Marisol, really hit the nail right on the head. "Aanhin pa namin ang tulong nyo ngayon? [What are we going to do with your help now that she's gone?]" she said to the asst. sec. of that poverty commission. Actually, for the whole show, all the comments and whatnot of the asst. sec. was negated by both the host and the press officer of GCAAP. It was soooo funny to see her face get all agitated. Her answers were scripted and was ass-kissing to the govt.

I hope this tragedy really opens the govt's eyes on the true state of the nation. This is what the SONA should be talking about. NOT new toll plazas, imagined regions and certainly NOT Manny Pacquiao.

Heck, even this text message rings more truthfully than every single SONA:

Bumaba na ang poverty sa bansa from "7 out of 10" to 5 out of 10. Namatay na yung dalawa. [Poverty in the country has lessened from "7 out of 10" to "5 out of 10". The other two already died.]
