She looked sad - apologetic almost - but pushed on in explaining; no matter how much it hurt to do so. Angel looked near to tears, but her wide, trusting cornflower blue eyes were absolutely begging her mother figure to continue.
“I couldn’t save him. I tried, baby, you have no idea how hard I tried, but I just couldn’t.” The leader’s hands shook on the child’s shoulder and silent tears streamed down her face, conveying how useless, helpless, and miserable she felt at the death she tried to prevent.
“I’m so sorry.” But that didn’t make it okay.
