Ah, it's awesome when something comes together.
Our Classics evening was one of those things. I ended up worrying over whether the script would be good enough and was afraid that John might underact his role and etc etc etc... but I quit worrying once it started. Because ...well... the other presentations were nothing more than. They'd had even less chance to practice than we had. So I quit worrying.
The Year 7s ...made me feel old. They were all nervous and shy and the audience went "aww" and there was definitely one person that went "That's my little baby out there!" - enough to make me cringe in embarrassment for the child or puke violently. And of course the Year 8s to 9s got let down by the fact that they were forced to do like bits of Latin and readings that the audience didn't really understand, as well as a joke completely in Greek that NOBODY laughed at, except the few Classics teachers in the audience.
So when we hit the round, we *kicked a lot of ass*.
Archie and Rob actually impro'ed a little musical into the first few minutes of their script, complete with bongo backbeat. It was totally crazy. Then they broke the 4th wall and Rob took up the role of the inhumanly gay Dionysus while Archie learned a lot about crossdressing. (pffshnort!)
Then John and Holly did my Medea script justice. The audience were riveted. Although the fact that it was in English and very modern (hey, I wrote it after all) might have had something to do with it; it was a break from the monotonous Latin and Greek plays. Plus I think the whole "vengeful wife" theme might have hit a little too close to home with some of the audience.
I think how modern we were kinda shocked the younger kids. They had their orders about what they were supposed to do; being good little children they stuck to it rigidly. We did it our way - sure, I think we even won round our Classics teacher, who before had seemed miffed that we had twisted her equivalent of the Clair Bible into what we enjoyed doing and what the audience liked.
Then there was a break for wine and snacks. Feta cheese/olives/wine = teh awesome. And there was loads of stuff left, too; I purloined olives and some pringles - there was a fight among the 3rd formers as to who got the pringles after I had smuggled them back to the boarding house. I didn't take wine for exactly the same reason.
And this Gasaraki theme gives me goosebumps.
ass kicking,
