Techie Question for Phone Geeks

Ok, do any of you know how to connect a phone to a pc? I've got the unit, I've got the software, I've got the cable and drivers, but for some reason none of them are recognising each other. Any thoughts?

I wanted to get this done before I go to Sydney, but it looks like it's not going to happen.
Grrrr!

edit: looks like it's not just me; my mum's phone (which was installed on here a few years back) won't connect either. *sighs*
