So I'll say it here instead.

I'll talk about it here, because I really feel like I want/need to, and what else are blogs for? It's what I was going to ask on Icarus Project, but, as mentioned in my previous post, I can't register yet. Damn though, because, as embarrassed as I sort of feel about saying this there because it seems so mild compared to what they go through, I ( Read more... )

Totally agree with you on the boring hierarchical bits of psychology courses.

On cycles - I know that people's diagnoses vary. My husband was diagnosed as bipolar after having been treated for depression for years and years and years, and the bipolar treatment really helped. His manias weren't the usual kind, he didn't have euphoria exactly but he had various other symptoms - for instance, some people go on obsessive spending sprees when they're manic, can't resist the impulse to buy loads of things they can't afford and don't need. So there are definitely different kinds of highs.

I think yours could fit. You may be kept high by whatever your obsessive interest is, but it could be that you're also inclined to become obsessively interested and to totally immerse yourself in things because you're inclined to have manic-like periods.

I totally agree on the validation aspect, too. I don't believe there's a clear-cut line between "mental illness" and "conditions", and personality, particularly personality in reaction to our society. It's extremely difficult for people with some temperaments to fit in with our culture. Possibly in a different world, the mood swings wouldn't be such a problem, partly because they'd be accomodated without fuss and stress and worry. We don't allow for enough diversity. And if you're someone who doesn't quite fit into the world as it is, you have the choice of getting a label from the medical model, or people seeing you as temperamental, difficult, lazy, or whatever. The labels can be useful even without fully buying into the whole model behind them.

Your comments were very encouraging. I was afraid people might think I'm being silly. I haven't yet gotten up the nerve to explore it with my shrink, and I still haven't decided if I should though I'm kind of leaning towards it.
