I know that techniques to make dark images brighter are nothing new, but this is the one that I came up with when I was fooling around on Photoshop this morning. It looks especially nice on images of real people, but with a bit of tweaking, looks equally as good on anime and manga images.

This tutorial is not translatable as it deals with Selective Coloring and Curves.
o1. Start out with your
base. In case you don't know, we're using Owen Wilson as Hansel from "Zoolander." ♥
o2. Duplicate the base and set to Screen 50-100%, depending on how light your image becomes.
o3. Make a new Hue/Saturation layer and set the Master Saturation to +20.
o4. Make a new Selective Coloring Layer and set the following:
Reds: +53 -13 -23 -100
Yellows: -23 -10 +38 -16
Whites: 0 -4 -23 -29
o5. Duplicate your base and bring it to the top. Set to Soft Light 100%.
o6. Make a new Curves Layer. On Channel RGB, set Input to 75 and Output to 115.
o7. Make a new Hue/Saturation layer and set Saturation for:
o8. Create a New Layer and fill it with #BAECFF. Set this layer to Color Burn 100%.
o9. Create a New Layer and fill it with #FFBAD1. Set this layer to Soft Light 100%.
1o. Create a New Layer and fill it with #D1D1D1. Set this layer to Color Burn 100%.
11. Duplicate your base layer and bring it to the top. Set the layer to Soft Light 50-100%, depending on how light your image becomes.
12. You can finish it here, or if you still think your image is too dark, duplicate your base, bring it to the top, set the layer to Screen 50-100%.
