I took my brother Luke to the Kansas City airport this morning; he's flying out to the Grand Canyon to get a job. His plane was scheduled to leave at 8:12 and since we needed to get him there at least an hour before that and it takes over 2 hours to get to KCI, we had to leave around 4:45. I got up at 3:30 to get ready to go!.That's about as early as I've ever had to set my alarm clock! My younger brother Elon came along with us because Mom especially didn't want me in Kansas City alone. Needless to say, this has been one LONG day! In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever end! :-)
Driving home was an adventure, to say the least. This is one country girl who is definitely more suited to gravel roads then 6 lane interstates with rush hour traffic. But maneuvering through those cars and trucks (and taking a wrong exit!) was the easy part... the hard part was refilling our vehicle with gas. I have never had to fill a car up because I have a Dad and plenty of brothers who generally do that. I just do the driving!
Well, the gas was getting low and I had to stop at a filling station. I stopped at one and managed to figure out how to twist the gas cap off and gingerly stuck the gas nozzle in. After puzzling over the fact that it wasn't working, I saw the "Pre-pay" sign. I didn't know how that would work because I didn't know for sure how much gas I needed to pay for. So I slipped the gas nozzle back in the pump and drove away as quietly as I could manage and headed for the station across the road only to see the same sign. With a quick glance around, I left the station and headed back out to the interstate. I hoped to find another station closer to home where I didn't have to pre-pay. But as I was leaving the station, an older gentleman in the car beside us was vigerously pointing at our Jeep and mouthing something I didn't understand. I puzzled over it as we once more flew down the highway and we hadn't gotten far when I realized that the gas cap was dangling outside! In my haste, I had remembered to shut the flap, but had forgotten to screw the cap back on! That required another unplanned stop to twist the obnoxious thing back on!
We finally found a gas station where I didn't have to pre-pay, so I stopped. After 3 unsucessful tries at pumping the gas, I called Mom on the cell phone. I was laughing so hard I could hardly talk straight. I mean, what 25- year -old daughter has to call home and ask Mom how to pump gas into a car?? :-D But She sweetly talked me through the steps and with Elon's help, I actually got the Jeep filled up!! I was so glad that gas station wasn't busy!
Praise the Lord; we finally made it home! I am beginning to think that all daughters should take a "mechanics" class from their father to learn how to handle cars. And all daughters should learn how to pump gas before they hit 25!
