it was my first photography class at arts umbrella. my class is full of 13 year-olds. I'm definitely the oldest.
but that's alright because the only things we do together are develop film.
I got there early and went and sat on the swingset across from arts umbrella. I used to play on that playground when I was about seven years old. I had david gray playing and the sun was shining and it was pretty damn rad.
a little girl came and sat on the swing beside me, and she was kicking her ugg boot-clad feet in the air and smiling and being really cute. she was maybe 9 or 10. she was totally amusing herself, indulging in simple fun. she left. she was cute. I was content.
then this other little girl comes up. strangely enough, also in ugg boots, around the same age as the other girl. she sits on the swing as her parents stand by. then she says in this really obnoxious bratty voice:
"is my ipod charged?? is it charged??"
"yes honey."
"dad. push me!!!"
she was so bratty and rude. I was so shocked by the contrast between the two girls. it was kind of disturbing. and depressing. I left.
and then, early this morning, I was getting ready and I rediscovered my clay plaque.
do you guys remember, in grade 6 I think it was, when we made all that clay stuff for art, and one of them was a plaque to hang on your wall?
so this plaque had to have 3 "be" statements. here is what 11 or 12 year-old chantal came up with.
"be adventurous
be original
be you"
I can't believe that my sense of self at that age was so developped. what happened?
ps. last night was a good time.
but why do people always think james and I look alike?
