December 24, 2016…

“Do we have everything?” Seiren asked.

“I think so.” Changmin answered as he checked the contents of their grocery cart. They were buying ingredients for their Christmas dinner. “Yup, it’s everything.”

“I still think something’s missing.” Seiren checked the contents too, thinking hard on what’s missing. “Aha.  I know. We don’t have anything for desert. Do you know how to make something for dessert?”

“Not really.”

“I’m not really in the mood to make anything complicated. How about Banana Split? Is that okay with you?”

“Yeah sure. I like Banana Split.”

“Then Banana Split it is.”

“Crap, I forgot something.” Changmin said just as they finished loading their groceries in the car. “Stay here Sei. I’ll be right back.”

“Okay.” Seiren replied, closing the back door of the car and heading for the passenger seat. Before she was able to close the door, the screech of brakes made her turn her head immediately to the sound. She saw a flash of red and Changmin get hit by the car. She got out of the car in record speed and ran to where Changmin was.

She found Changmin sitting right in front of the car nursing his hurt knee.

“Changmin! Are you okay?” She asked, kneeling beside him.

“Still alive.” He joked. When he saw the pain that flashed through her eyes Changmin gave her a smile of reassurance. “I’ll be fine. It might just be a bruise.”

The driver of the car that hit him got out and apologized. He didn’t have any other excuse except that he got distracted by something on his car floor and when he looked up Changmin was already so close. Seiren didn’t say a word. She just stayed silent until the fuss was over and drove Changmin to the hospital despite his objections, saying that he was fine. She wasn’t taking any chances.

“He’ll be fine Miss, just bruised on the knee.” The doctor reassured Seiren after he examined Changmin. Seiren just nodded I response for lack of anything to say.

She stayed silent as she drove them to her condo. It was a good thing that the flashbacks of the past happened when they were already in the parking lot of the condo. She buried her face in her hands as she tried to take control of her emotions.

Changmin watched her in concern as she remained motionless against the steering wheel; face still buried in her hands.

“Sei?” He called tentatively, touching her shoulder.

“I don’t think-“ She swallowed. “I don’t think spending Christmas together would be a good idea.”

“What do you mean not a good idea?” He asked, frowning.

“I mean, you got hit by a car today while you were with me. You were lucky you only got bruised.”

“Wait wait wait. You’re blaming yourself for what happened to me?” He asked incredulously.

“What do you think? May I remind you that I had three boyfriends who died because of me.”

Changmin shook his head in disbelief. He made her face him, taking her face in his hands to force her to look at him.

“You’re actually blaming yourself for their deaths until now? Come on Sei, maybe it was just their time to go.”

“I thought about that. But what are the chances that three guys connected to me die in the span of three years apart on the same day?”

Changmin didn’t know how to answer that, but she just looked so broken that he knew he wanted to erase every bad thing that she ever experienced.

“You are going to spend Christmas with me understand? I will not allow you to spend another Christmas alone with your self-pity as your only companion.”

“How did you-?”

“Hanabusa told me.”

Seiren just stared at him. “I don’t want to take the chance of hurting you more than I already have.”

“This…” He said, gesturing so his bruised knee. “…is not your fault. It was from my lack of attention while crossing the street, and partly the fault of the driver for taking his eyes of the street. But it is not your fault.”

She was battling with herself; she desperately wanted to believe what he was saying. She didn’t want to be depressed on the time of the year that’s supposed to be celebrated happily.

“Let’s go in now before all the vegetables wilt and before the ice cream melts.”

In the end she just let herself be taken away by Changmin. They immediately started making their dinner since they were already short in time due to the accident. Seiren was the one who walked around the kitchen. She ordered Changmin to just sit on the table and do what he can just sitting down.

Once done, they enjoyed their dinner in front of the fireplace in silence. They then had dessert and coffee while watching Home Alone 4.

“Hahaha. That kid’s really smart. I’ll never get tired of this movie.” Changmin said with tears forming in his eyes from laughter.

“Yeah, but it really isn’t advisable to leave your kids behind without someone to look after them.”

“I agree. When I have kids, I wouldn’t want to leave even one behind without someone I can trust to look after him.”

Seiren glanced at Changmin only to find him staring at her. She looked away when she felt her heart suddenly hammer in her chest with the way he was staring at her. They watched another movie in silence until it was midnight and the sky was suddenly covered with an array of different colors. They both stood up and went to the windows to watch.

“Wow.” Seiren said.

“Yeah, wow.”

“I wonder why no matter how many times I watch fireworks, I’ll always be amazed at how beautiful it is.”

Changmin just smiled and thought. You are just like the fireworks.
