It appears the oh-so-grand Grey Warden decided we're going to Lake Calenhad to pay a house visit to the mages instead of going to Denerim for supplies. We're going to a giant tower that the church uses to keep their domesticated mages in like cattle. Oh, I'm so thrilled. Mayhap we'll even rescue kittens from trees on the way ( Read more... )

Domesticated mages?

Magic-users that let themselves be taken away to far locations to "train not to let their magic consume them with greed" or whatever the Chantry has come up with now. Legal mages.

So do they need that training or could they master their powers without it?

They can master magic without the Circle's help. The Circle is just an excuse, really, to keep mages under lock and key. Myself? I'm an apostate, an 'illegal mage', if you will. I haven't summoned a horde of demons by accident so I suppose I'm doing well, yes?

So they're afraid of what someone capable of magic could do when left to their own devices.

What happens to 'illegal mages' such as yourself when caught?

More like revenge. The Chantry, which runs the Circle, was founded by the 'prophet' Andraste. She was killed by the Tevinter Impirium, an empire that has long since dissipated. The Impirium was run by mages that used blood magic so the Chantry loathes all mages.

Oh? Execution, naturally. What else are we lost deserving of? Not that the Chantry's hounds will ever get a chance to kill me.

That's... ridiculous.

It's reassuring to hear that they won't kill one of the few sensible people around.

I'm harder to kill than I look, I assure you. The templars, however, learned that lesson far too late.

Oh, we have that in common.
So you're saying they have learned?

Good thing to know.

And, in general? The ones that haven't met me have learned nothing; the others learned the second before their death. Pity, really.

Lives will continue to be lost in vain then.

The lives of fools are worthless to begin with, no great loss.
