Tomorrow I'm going to be 24. I think I thought I would feel old by the time I was in my mid-twenties, but I don't. Kinda hard when I've got an open novelization of a comic book (Generation X, "Crossroads") next to me and I'm in the middle of re-watching season 1 of "Avatar." Ian's got this theory that Californians don't grow up or mature. You pull someone out of San Francisco or Fresno or San Diego and they've still got the same neuroticisms and care about the same things as teenagers - status, cool places to hang out, having the most amount of friends and being liked, being whacky, defining themselves by subcultures or hobbies.
I don't think I made it as far as a teenager. I'm probably stuck in 5th grade.
Last Sunday I went to a little girl's birthday party. I've mentioned the situation - Ian's mom's boyfriend divorced his ex a while ago and they have a daughter together. The girl's mom doesn't want the father around so there are supervised visits. I supervise. I haven't seen anything that would make me question his devotion to the girl or his ability to parent. He's a great father and somehow balances between being her friend, a role model, and getting her to follow the rules. To be fair, she's an easy kid. It's got me thinking of what I'll be like as a parent, and I hope I have a kid like her. The other day when we picked her up she was telling us how she finished NaNoWriMo and her story was over 7,000 words (she's 8. It's a novel to her).
She's 9 today (our birthdays are a day apart). I think I'm supervising a visit this afternoon after school. And actually, these Avatar DVDs are hers that I'm borrowing. I'm re-thinking the age range I want to teach. Maybe elementary school. Maybe Autism. I thought I could connect with teenagers more, but I'm good at playing with kids, coming up with activities for them, talking to them, and, once I'm trained, probably teaching them.
My flu is almost totally gone. Yesterday I amanaged to clean my rats' cage. They're getting big - twice the size of my cell phone. They've been cuddling up together because of the cold, so less exercise. Callie's starting to put on some pudge. She's not unhealthy yet, though.
supervising,
