Just_muse_me :8.7.1. The Sixth Day

Without fail the sun rises every morning. Audrey never put much thought into it, but it somehow amazed her. If there’s one thing anyone could be certain about it’s the fact that the rising sun would always be the first to greet the great apple. Even when your at the lowest point of your life, and didn’t want to see the sun anymore, she knew that regardless of how anyone felt it would find them. Comfort them. Comfort her.

Six days. Today would be the sixth day, Audrey would wake up before the sun, pack a lunch, and drag her exhausted arse to the hospital. A thermos of extra strong coffee resting in between her thighs as she drove; however, for the last few mornings it had been different. Noah, slippers and all, had been driving Audrey to the hospital. Her head rested against the car window while she took a few minutes to relax, maybe catch a few minutes of much needed sleep. Zoey quietly doing the same in the back seat.

Noah would wait patiently in his car, while Audrey walked through the sliding doors of the hospital. She’d turn on her heels, waving goodbye, and with a wave in return, Noah would drive away.

Her damp sneakers squeaked in protest as she dragged her feet through the familiar corridor. Turning the corner, she expected to see equally familiar faces seated in the ICU waiting room. The grey walls captured the gloominess, keeping the air in the room heavy, making it hard for those to breath.

Instantly she recognised Leon’s mum, her course dark curly hair tied into a tight ponytail behind her head. Slouching down in her chair, she was fast asleep. The rise and fall of her chest was hidden by a worn blue blanket. It probably belonged to Leon as Audrey remembered the bottom left corner was torn when she and him were young. He cried for days when he finally realised the damage.

Beside the African sat Teagan, a cap pulled down over her eyes. Taking small steps towards her, Audrey gave her shoulder a gentle shake. Stirring awake, Teagan’s eyes opened, and for a brief second hope flashed through her eyes before it quickly faded once she recognised it was only her friend.

“Any news?”

Straightening her posture, Teagan gave her head a shake. Stretching her ivory arms above her head, she took a moment before giving Audrey a verbal response. “He’s stable, but hasn‘t woken up yet.”

Audrey hummed, sinking into the chair beside her. The thermos was shared between the two dancers for minutes before Sandra, Leon’s mum, began to shift in her chair. She was heartbroken, her cheeks still damp from tears. Her son. Her only family was fighting for his life, and the only thing she could possibly do was sit and wait.
It was absolutely devastating, because none of them could do anything but watch the hands on the clock move. Miss. Vice claimed that it‘s God‘s will to choose whether he would take her child away from her, or keep him on this earth.

Audrey couldn‘t believe that. Why would God choose to let this happen? What would the benefit be if Leon were to die? So many questions were left without answers and for that very reason, Audrey chose not to believe in god. She tried, believe me, she has, but who in the right mind would believe that an “all loving” god would let what happened happen to anyone, let alone Leon. He didn’t deserve this. His mother didn’t deserve this grief.

“Good morning, ladies.” The nurses voice helped dispel some of gloominess but within a few minutes it settled back down. Suffocating them.

“Morning.” Audrey forced a smile, before the nurse asked Sandra to incompany her to Leon’s room. Teagan’s head fell to rest on Audrey’s shoulder, as they waited in silence. Small talk was difficult to produce between the two friends. The silence was overwhelming; however, what was there to talk about? The topics somehow kept leading to Leon.

“You can leave, Teag.” She felt the head rested on her shoulder rotate back and forth. “No, really, you should leave. I’ve gotten enough sleep. I’ll call you if anything comes up.” It was the least she could do, and besides Teagan’s time waiting was Sandra was over. It’s was now Audrey’s turn, and within a few hours her father, David, was going to take her place. Everyone was putting in an effort to help support their friend.

Abruptly, Teagan raised to her feet, and in her attempt to stand tall, she roughly bumped heads with Audrey. Clutching her throbbing head, Audrey glanced at Teagan confused by the fact that she wasn’t clutching her head as well. “Hey Teagan, What-” She trailed off as she followed the blond’s vision.

Sandra approached them, her hands cupped around her mouth. Fresh tears streaming down her chocolate brown cheeks. Fearing the worse, Audrey and Teagan were quick to embrace the mother.

In that sixth day, Leon finally woke up.
