Boxes upon boxes of Nathaniel’s belongings were piled in Audrey’s small apartment living room. Written in black ink on the boxes was his name. Audrey’s brown hair was previously tied in a tight bun; however, during hours of packing, it fell into a messy side bun that touched her exposed shoulders. She racked her fingers through her hair, as she took a step backwards to process what she accomplished. She managed to gather Nathaniel’s belongings, so she could give them back to his family.

Audrey descended backwards until her ankles came in contact with the couch, and she lowered herself into a sitting position. With closer inspection she realised the living room appeared almost lifeless without his DVD’s, books, weights, plasma television, and stereo. She held a handful of tissues in her hand, but they remained dry. No tears fell, she accepted Nathaniel’s death and she needed to live her life, yet somehow she didn’t want to. Life shouldn’t just go on after your fiancée’s death, but it does. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath before picking up her cell phone. She dialled Leon’s number, and within a few rings he answered.

“Hey Leon, I’m ready to go,” Audrey breathed painfully, as her lip shook in anguish. Silently, she cursed as tears formed behind her eyelids.

“I know this is hard, are you alright?” He asked concerned. She heard a car honk, so it was clear that he was already on the road. Tilting her head towards the ceiling in an effort to keep the tears from falling, Audrey took another deep breath and sighed.

“I don’t know if I can let go yet,” She sobbed honestly, as her small frame shook from repressed tears. She heard slight fumbling on the other line, and a familiar female voice surprised her.

“Hun, it’s me, Teagan. Open one of those boxes and keep a sweater, or a book that he enjoyed. You have to realise that your not letting go. It’s just that surrounding yourself with all of his things is suffocating,” Teagan’s caring voice soothed Audrey, and understandingly, she nodded slightly.

“Teagan, I think I should move out,” Audrey mumbled, and without a doubt, she heard Teagan whisper something to Leon.

“If that’s what you really want, Audrey, you can move in with me.” Leon announced seriously.

“Thanks Leon, I’d like that,” Audrey replied, as she raised to her feet, opened a box, and pulled out one of Nathaniel’s navy sweaters.

“But, we’re going to take this one step at a time. First, lets give Nate’s belongings to his family, and we’ll talk about this more when we get back,”

“Sounds good,” She mumbled, as she wrapped the sweater around her shoulders, and snuggled on the couch with a small smile on her features. The tears still remained to fall.
