truth_or_dare :Week 9 Dare: I shouldn't be hearing your voice.

Call someone you haven't talked to in at least six months.

Raking her fingers through her hair, Audrey threw her hair down her back preventing it from falling in front of her face as she reached down under her car seat feeling around for her cell phone.

How her cell managed to bounce under the seat and completely disappear was beyond her. Thankfully her car was parked in her apartment garage, so getting into an accident wasn’t a problem. The only problem was finding her damn phone, and her house key. That was probably her biggest flaw: losing things. Letting them slip through her fingers.

Why she didn’t decide to put her apartment key on her car key ring was beyond her. She always reminded herself, but held off. Now she was paying for it. She had misplaced it a little over 5 days. Continuing to curse loudly, she searched for her phone. Fed up, Audrey pushed open her car door, and dropped onto her knees. Once she was eye level with the car floor, she spotted her cell phone.

Sighing in relieve, she grabbed her phone, and kissed it for added love. Her luck for the day seemed slim, but she secretly hoped that maybe Aiden would leave his office to give her his key to use. She knew this would have been the fifth time she called him about his key in the last week, but she was desperate, and he was nice. It was worth another try.

In a hurry, she scrolled down her contacts list, and stopped when she came across the name Carter, Aiden. Placing her phone to her ear, she waited for him to answer. After the third ring, a voice greeted her, but it certainly wasn’t Aiden’s.

“This is Dallas Brookes speaking.”

Audrey felt her whole body freeze, her gut fell through the floor. “Hello?” He said after a moment of silence. She must’ve scrolled down too far. ‘My luck just keeps getting better.’ She thought sarcastically.

“I, ah, think I must’ve dialled the wrong number.” She explained, awkwardly clearing her voice.

“No worries. It happens to the best of us.” He laughed, which made her gut sink even lower. The feeling she felt from hearing his voice made her want to be sick. She didn’t want to miss him.

“Okay. Thanks. Bye.” She managed to say, but before she could end the call. He recognized her voice.

“Wait, Audrey? Is that you?” He asked, she could literally hear the smile on his face.

“Yeah. How’d you know?” she replied, sinking back into the drivers seat of her Chevrolet Malibu. She really needed to sit down for this conversation.

“Audrey, come on, it’s you. I could remember your voice any day.”

“Dallas, please don’t.” She pleaded, shaking her head. The dust finally settled from their mistake, and she didn’t want to cause it to raise again. She would greatly prefer it if their emotions remained buried as well. “I had no intention of calling you. It was an accident.”

“But we need to talk, Aud. It’s been a little over six months since I’ve last spoken to you. I miss having you as a friend to run to. How are you?”

This was exactly what she didn’t want to deal with. She couldn’t deal with him. Why did ex-lovers have to make a reappearance at the worst possible time? Dallas was the only word that escaped her lips. Clenching her jaw, she finally managed a few sentences. “I’ve been good. How’s LA?” She asked. Small talk was good. Small talk was the only thing she would allow.

“I’ve been keeping busy. Enjoying the view from my 23rd floor office.” An odd sort of confidence was present in his voice.

“Still an editor?” She questioned, with a small smile.

“And loving every minute of it.” There was a moment of silence before Dallas continued. “I was thinking about coming back to New York, visiting for a few days.”

“You shouldn’t… visit me, Dallas. It’ll be better that way.” It was slightly painful, because she knew that he loves her, or he did in the past, when he left New York. She didn’t know where his heart was, nor did she care. The past was in the past, and unfortunately he was very much apart of it. She couldn’t allow a man she had a sexual past with back into her life for the fear of straining the relationship She and Noah were forming. Also, she had other things to worry about, like getting into her apartment. “I have to go.” Without hearing his goodbye, she closed her cell phone.
