190 Everyday Wear: Audrey Hepburn inspired

Aug 27, 2010 23:46

21 June 2010- These days, the old classic movies of the 1930s-50s have had me completely spellbound. I adore the elegance of their dress, their perfectly coiffed hair, the leading men and ladies... but above all, the way they enunciate their words (like music to my ears!).

I'm past the age when affecting my speech to sound British or American was a daily amusement. Instead, today I draw inspiration from the clothes, hair, and the way the actors carried themselves. Come a lazy afternoon spent reclining on plush cushions dining at Yantra, and I look towards Funny Face and Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn for her casual wear style pointers.

Boat neckline. Check. Black long sleeve top. Check. Pearls. Check. Comfortable ballet flats. Check.

I know most people would disagree on pearls in casual wear, but why not? Casual doesn't mean sloppy. It means what you are most comfortable in. And I know I'll never be at ease if I didn't accessorise in some way or other (one of my vain peculiarities, please excuse me).

So on my ears are pearl snowflakes (see previous picture), around my wrist a pearl bracelet, and on my finger a pearl ring (see next picture). As we speak, one of Beatrix Potter's mice has borrowed my bracelet for the trimmings on her little gown.

Granted, I look nothing like the 1930s, 40s, or even 50s. Coiffed hair is a final crucial element to achieving a look of that era, and I'm not comfortable with trading in my mane for victory rolls or pin curls, at least not just yet.
