Today I was on the 2 train to Brooklyn from Manhattan. A crazy possibly homeless man got on at Wall St. Throughout the rest of the ride he sang "My Humps" very loudly while banging the subway doors with all his might to keep a beat. Here is the part that is so New York about the whole situation: nobody showed a single reaction. The car was filled with mothers with babies, Wall Street suits, students, etc... Not one person cast a glance his way or looked around the car. The man I was sharing the pole with simply avoided my eye contact...a usual subway activity. I was just sitting there trying hard not to giggle to myself. Please imagine a bunch of people crammed into a tiny subway car and this man is getting his groove on to Fergie...screaming the lyrics and banging on the wall...and people stare straight ahead as if absolutely nothing is happening. It was hilarious and so characteristic of this city. I love it.
