Thoughts on Season Premieres

Oct 02, 2003 00:07

So, Wednesday night on the WB, huh? Why oh why did those bastards have to have two cliffhanger season premieres?! Couldn't they have shown two Smallville eps tonight, and then two Angel eps next week? All in the name of ratings I guess. I have to say I was definitely entertained throughout both episodes. Pleasantly surprised, even.

I'd start off by writing down my thoughts on tonight's Smallville, but thamiris has said it better than I ever could. It's like the woman's reading my mind! Check her out here.

I will talk about Angel though. Having missed half of last season, I expected to go into it totally clueless. For the most part, I did. I am not sure why the gang got control of Wolfram and Hart, and why Cordelia is in a coma (other than because ME didn't want Charisma this season) but I know the answers are somewhere on those tapes that I need to go through. So, someday I will know.

Thoughts on "Conviction" (in no particular order). As I am currently worrying over the ridiculous amount of work I have for tomorrow, these are most likely going to be fairly lame comments. I will try for a more concrete review next week, after we've seen part two of the premiere.

  • I have to say, overall, the technical aspects of the show were really nice. Lovely camera work, especially during the first scene in the Wolfram and Hart offices. Joss' dialogue just gets better and better. I can't wait for the Firefly movie. Also, the vamp dusting effects look like they've made some sort of advance. At any rate, they were nice looking.
  • I actually spent an entire episode not hating Fred. How is that possible? She usually annoys me, but today, nothing. Weird.
  • Despite my earlier reservations about bringing Harmony back, I have to say that she was great in this episode. Especially the whole, "Cordy was my best friend" conversation. Hilarious stuff.
  • The whole thing with Gunn was nicely mysterious throughout the episode, and the payoff...man. J. August looked so great in that suit. It felt like watching the end of Legally Blonde (in a purely "woah, great lawyering" way).
  • That whole not bringing Spike into the episode until the last 5 seconds thing? Totally called it! After about the first fifteen minutes, I started getting the feeling that I would not be seeing Spike for quite some time. But aside from my irrational (or is it?) hatred of cliffhangers, I really enjoyed the way they just shoved him at us at the last minute. It'll give me a whole week to try and figure out why he's back. And then to see how way off base I was. Hopefully my theory will be way worse than what they come up with.

You know, I thought I had more to say about this episode. I guess I don't. Don't get me wrong, I totally enjoyed it. Maybe it's just all of the stuff that I have due tomorrow (pitches for Screenwriting, a presentation for Folklore, Italian test). In fact, just looking at that, I'd better get to work.

angel, smallville
