Okay, went to the test screening of KNOCKED UP tonight (the Katherine Heigl film coming out 6/1) and I just want to say that this film made me want to move into the Sahara Desert, far away from all mankind. Because seriously? This film just irked me from the first frame onwards. First and foremost, I know that this film was a comedy and therefore cannot be taken seriously. But how is having a child with a one-night stand a good idea? Especially if that one-night stand happens to be a drug addicted slacker with $119 in his bank account and no job prospects? That just shows a lack of any sort of motivation. Watching Katherine Heigl's character (who was naturally gorgeous and intelligent) settle for that complete jackass who didn't respect her, her family members, or himself was almost physically painful to watch. Also: who teaches parenting nowadays? Sure, they're buying all of the requisite books from B&N but that doesn't stop him from lighting up a bong and that doesn't stop her from going out for late-night clubbing sessions like 28 weeks into her pregnancy. Maybe I'm a traditionalist but I don't think society takes parenting seriously enough (or maybe that's just the educator in me, wanting to cultivate the next generation for great accomplishments). Also: the fact that she would ever consider letting his friends into their child's life must be the definition of irresponsibility.
Then again, the women didn't give a much better showing. But when the new slacker/boyfriend booted her sister out of the hospital room, I almost walked out of the cinema. Because he's been in her life for 36 weeks. Her sister, meanwhile, has been there her entire life -- including all of the times when he's left her on her own (which for 36 weeks was quite frequently). He had absolutely no right to place himself above her family and friends.
Also: were we supposed to be going "awww" when they held hands and walked around the shopping mall together? Because they'd seriously known each other for about eight weeks and holding hands does not amount to a meaningful, long-term relationship. Neither does having a child with a one-night stand. That doesn't amount of to a meaningful, long-term relationship either.
That amounts to divorce and problems getting child support. Congratulations, Katherine Heigl. You should have gotten an abortion.
