Nikita

My little furry girl is loving her new house. She used to have only 1 bed and 1 loveseat. Now she has 2 beds, 2 loveseats, 1 sofa, and 1 reclining armchair. So many places to shed, so little time. At the moment, I'm down in the living room with my laptop (yes, it's back from the shop, and they swear they could find nothing wrong) on the coffee table, and Nikita has been curled up on her armchair for hours. The rocking scared her at first (especially when she tried to sit at the top), but now it's her favorite sleeping spot. Unfortunately, it's also Chris's favorite reading spot (and the only seat right by the lamp), so when he needs it, he gently lifts the cat, sits down and reclines, then places the cat back on his lap. Sometimes, it seems Nikita doesn't even wake up from it.

I had to "walk" her to the vet today. OK, so I walked while Nikita and her Sherpa bag were digging a groove into my shoulder. I woke up this morning when Chris put Nikita on my chest insisting I look at her neck. There was a sore just below her collar. Chris worried it was fleas. The last time she had fleas, we never were able to get rid of them despite frequent shampooings (of cat and carpets). She only got to leave them behind when we moved to the La Jolla apartment. Now that she has access to the patio garden in back, Chris worries what she might pick up. The only bugs I've seen or felt have been aphids (dozens/hundreds of them on the roses). "Aphids don't bite cats. They only eat plants." Yeah, well sometimes flies bite animals.

Dr. A doesn't know what caused it, but I have some germicidal ointment for her sore. In addition, I've been informed she has a mild tartar issue which needs treatment while it's still just mild. How does that happen? She only eats hard, crunchy food. The vet was pleased that Nikita is down to 12.5 pounds. When she got up to 14 a couple years ago, the vet started to worry (saying 10 would be a healthy weight for her frame). Nikita still looks very plump (look who's talking), but we're thrilled that she's being more active during her waking hours. The stairs are wicked cool.
