Today is the first I've seen of them. Until yesterday, I wasn't even aware they were out, which just goes to show how I've been living in a cave lately.
I've seen fewer movies in the theatres this year than since 1996. (Spring and fall quarters of 2003 murdered me.) Then I had family visiting or was visiting family while all the Oscar bait came out in November and December. So it shouldn't have come as a surprise when I printed off a list of nominees and highlighted which ones I'd seen that there wasn't one single category where I'd seen everything.
I have 4 weeks left, and I'm on a mission. I must see the following (in order of priority) otherwise I can't in good conscience jeer when some undeserving shmuck wins:
1) Master & Commander
2) Cold Mountain
3) House of Sand & Fog
4) Something's Gotta Give
5) 21 Grams
6) Monster
7) The Cooler
City of God (cinematography, directing, adapted screenplay) sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it at first. As it turns out, I saw this more than a year ago at a critics' screening. Jean and I were the only ones who weren't falling over ourselves in admiration of it.
I can see American Splendor (adapted screenplay) and Pieces of April (supp. actress: Patricia Clarkson) from Netflix - they're due out on DVD this month.
