Her fingers drummed along the surface of her jeans as she bit her lower lip. “What if it rains?” she mumbled to herself, slightly frowning. She wants to get there as soon as possible. Even listening to her favourite song didn’t help to keep her calm as she turned and stared at the sky above.
Dark gloomy clouds. Not a sign she appreciates at the moment. Reaching into her bag, Rye tried to find her ipod amongst the stuff she had thrown in, and her fingers touched a familiar smooth surface that brought a light smile to her face. “Right, everything will be alright,” she whispered to herself as she pulled the figurine out from her sling bag, “Nothing should worry me when you’re here right?”
Somehow she just had to bring it with her today, it was a representation of Dragaine when he was not around. Like now. She flipped the figurine upside down, the base in full view as the teddy bear’s head rested on her thigh. ‘Mate’, the word written on it with a black permanent marker is still clear as ever.

Dragaine lazed around in his room, his blue eyes trailing the sides of the ceiling, to his bookcase, then shelf filled with his favourite romance movies, and back to the ceiling again. He was feeling restless. Bored. And not wanting to take the first step and call.
It was no one’s fault, really. Total misunderstanding, coupled with hurling curses and a seriously, seriously high fever ends out in a total disaster. He didn’t mean to swear, it’s just that at that moment with his one hell of a throbbing headache and discomfort that word just came out.
And Rye snapped. Of course she would. Who wouldn’t when you’ve been out there hiding under a tree in the rain, soaked for about an hour because there weren’t any near enough proper shelter?
The black haired boy closed his eyes as he frowned. It has been a long time since the duo had fought, like...five years at least? They had been childhood friends, knowing each other since the diapers era, growing up together, attending the same schools for life. Even though Rye had moved away when she was fifteen, they managed to keep in contact. She didn’t move far, it was a reachable distance on bicycle, not to mention he got his driver’s license as soon as he was of legal age.
They were best of friends, ‘soul mates’ as they would call themselves sometimes. They share many common interests and differences, loves and hates. They hate war films. Listen to all forms of rock. Love Chinese takeout. Detest fighting. Freethinkers.
Then he sat up, trying to brush away the empty feeling. It was a Thursday, their study day. Seems like he’ll have to do some studying by himself.
As he sat down by his study desk, his eyes found themselves fixed on a small teddy bear figurine in front of him, and his long slender fingers somehow made themselves towards it as Dragaine picked it up. It was a present he got from Rye a few year back, during ‘friendship day’, the day they had became ‘friends’, which was Dragaine’s birthday as he was younger than Rye. He remembered he gave Rye an identical one as well on that day, and a smile played on his lips. Turning it around he read off the word written on the base using a permanent marker, ‘Soul’.
Clutching it with one hand, he exited his room.

When Rye reached her destination, the dark clouds were already gathering. She stuck her hands into the pockets as she walked through the rather empty garden, to her favourite spot.
Soon Rye was standing in front of one huge bottle tree, the one located furthest into the garden, as drops of rain splatter on her long brown hair. Reaching out one hand to touch the tree bark, it was as if she was asking for permission before she leaned her body on it as she pulled the hoodie over her head. It was a ‘safe spot’, as the both of them called it. A place where they shared many secrets, memories and fun together, where nothing else in the world would bother them.
---
It didn’t take Dragaine long before he reached the Bottle Tree Garden as he parked his car into a slot and got off. It was starting to drizzle, but it’s not bothering him, as long as he reached his ‘safe spot’. Their small haven.
As he neared the place, he spotted a familiar figure sitting down near the tree. He smiled.
“Do you seriously like the rain that much?” Dragaine asked aloud as a pair of hazel brown eyes looked up to match his.
Rye smiled, then raise her hand up, a gesture which asks for the other to pull her up. And, also a sign of forgiveness. “You should know better,” she started, “Now hurry up before my pants got wet!”
“Jeans, don’t get wet easily,” Dragaine said as he pulled the brown hair girl up, earning a light slap from the said girl.
“You’ve got the cheek to say that, mister.”
Dragaine said nothing as he gave a light smile and guilty look.
“Well, I’m sorry.”
“So I’m sorry.”
The duo bowed an apology at the same time. Dragaine was first to look up, and he started laughing again, and Rye joined in.
“Soul mates for life, huh?” Dragaine started, as he gave a slight smirk.
“Soul mates for life.” Rye couldn’t agree more as she gave him a high-five, before she starts to drag him towards the entrance. “Now let’s go before Mr Weak here falls sick again.”
Dragaine laughed, both of them ran off, hand in hand under the light rain.
---
“Say, what brings you there?” Rye asked when both were clean and dry in Dragaine’s living room, the television broadcasting uninteresting news.
Dragaine shrugged, pointing to the figurine that now laid on the coffee table. Rye laughed as she took hers out and place it beside Dragaine’s.
