First Week of Work

My first week of work was so awesome. I love this company. I love this job. When I first showed up on Tuesday the receptionist in the lobby asked my name. When I told her my first name she said "Oh you're the new hire! We're so happy to have you joining us." As I sat in the lobby waiting for my boss to come down and meet me, several people walked through the lobby. The receptionist, Rose, introduced me to all of them. They had already heard about me and knew that day was my first day. They were very friendly and seemed excited to meet me. I felt so welcomed. It was amazing. I was shown to my desk (I have a real desk with real walls around it for the first time ever) and then introduced to everyone on my floor. The first thing I noticed is that I am about the tallest person on the floor. I met two men who were taller than me, but the other 25 or so people were all shorter. My boss' boss, Mabel, doesn't even come up to my shoulders. I met the CFO of the company. He's five levels above me. I stood at least a head taller than him. I felt embarrassed about it for some reason. But I'm sure I'll get over it. Right now I'm just learning their accounting system and some of their procedures. It's so interesting. It's challenging, but not so challenging as to become frustrating. I like the office, I like the people, and I like the work. So far I am loving the whole experience.

I decided I should pick up where Elizabeth's blog left off in terms of "interesting things I saw on the subway." This doesn't quite fall into that category, but I thought I should include it anyway. As part of my blog I'm starting a list of "things I left on the BART train" because I'm sure the first thing won't be the last. When I arrived they gave me a handful of styrofoam cups. My boss told me with great contempt that I would have to buy my own coffee mug and water cup because the company has gone "green." Can you imagine their nerve. So I diligently went out late one night and bought myself a coffee mug that claimed to be un-tippable and a water cup with a lid. They didn't fit in my messenger bag I carry with me to and from work. I had to put them under my seat on the train. As I set them there I told myself "I can't forget these." I fell asleep at some point during the ride. I woke up to find that I was at an underground station, but I didn't know which one. Panicked, I asked the passenger next to me which station it was. He told me it was 19th street and I breathed a sigh of relief because I still had two more stops before I had to get off. I put all my focus on staying awake and making sure I didn't miss my stop. I got to the Embarcadero station, got up and walked off the train. As the doors slid shut behind me I quietly whispered a curse word to myself. I think that's a feeling I will need to get used to.
