Leona Lewis: "Better In Time"
Serena could barely pull herself away from Andy this morning. It was either stay and have her way with America's sweetheart and be left without a job (Even she can't afford to lose her employment in this economy), or face the dragon and her impossible demands. Like any other day at the office, Miranda has chosen to torture the Runway staff with last minute changes. The Closet is in a state of pure chaos with staffers running here and there, and as the new Nigel it's Serena's responsibility to execute Miranda's outrageous tasks.
"Hey English." answering her cell "How are you?"
"Let's skip the pleasantries. Are you seriously dating that cow?" Emily used her usual bitter tone when referring to Andy.
Walking into The Closet, "From personal experience I can tell you that she's far from a cow." thinking about the events that took place earlier that morning in Andy's shower.
Emily snorts, "Spare me the details of your relations with that...that..." she was fuming "Of all people, Serena. You had to choose her. Why?"
"I know it's difficult for you think of someone other than yourself..." sighing in irritation "But it really has nothing to do with you, Emily. Andy and I have been friends for a long time...and..well after things between you and I ended...our relationship developed into something more than friendship."
"Spare me, Serena. You've been into her ever since she came strutting into Runway in those Chanel boots."
Serena smiled at the long forgotten memory.
Interrupting Serena's trip down memory lane, "You know she will never get over Miranda. She's just-"
"Are you pissed because it's Andy Sachs I'm fucking, or are you just upset that not I'm sitting around waiting for you to change your mind about ending our relationship?" cutting Emily off. "You really should see someone about this unhealthy obsession you have with her."
"You had to have known, Serena." she hissed "How do you think it makes me feel having to hear about Serandy this and Serandy that. Even in Paris, I can't escape that tart."
Sorting through the clothes for tomorrow's shoot, "Knowing and caring are two totally different things Emily."
"For bloody crying out loud you have to end this...this thing with Sachs."
"The fact that you think you can call me out of the blue and order me around, after not speaking to me in months is proof of how delusional you are. " growing bored with the conversation, "Things might be easy over at French Runway, but I actually have work to do here."
"I'm not finished." she screeched. Serena muttered something in Portuguese. "In English, Serena. I can't understand you."
"How's this for English?" taking a moment to pause, "Sod off, Emily." she screamed into the phone before snapping it shut.
Jocelyn sat nearby as the entire conversation unfolded, "Are you okay?"
Serena waved her hand in dismissal as she continued to sort through the clothes, "It's nothing. Just Emily being Emily."
Jocelyn nodded "Ahhh," sighing in acknowledgment, "She must have heard."
"Yeah." directing her attention back to the rack of clothes in front of her, "Where is the belt to go with this?" holding up Prada's latest Scoop-Neck Dress.
"Here" walking over to pass her the belt, "Look....I hate to get in your personal business, but do you think it's wise to continue this thing with Andy"
"First off it's not a thing. She's my girlfriend." Serena smiled as she thought of the brunette, "Jay she's smart, sexy and I adore her children...She can be a bit distant sometime, but she's warm and affectionate most of the time. Who wouldn't want to be with her if given the chance?"
"I know she can be exceptionally charming, but this is Andy we're talking about. Andy as in Andrea Priestly, ex-wife of Miranda Priestly, the editor of Runway, our boss." sitting on top of Serena's desk, "Do you remember how she reacted when you returned from Spain?"
Serena roughly stroked her hand through her golden lockes at the thought. Referring to her as a bitch would be a compliment. "Sim, but...but she has been her usual frosty self lately."
"Yeah cold and calculating." she hissed "I could see if it were that asshole Stephen, but it's not." For the first three years of Miranda and Andy's marriage things were almost smooth sailing around Runway. Miranda worked less, which meant she spent less time terrorizing the staff. When things began to sour between the two her hours extended often working into the early morning. Jocelyn laughed at the thought. During those days she prayed for the Pre-Andy Miranda, at least she gave them Christmas off. "Since working for Miranda, she has married and dated more people than I care to remember. Out of all of them, Andy was by far her her greatest love. You know her. She is not going to let this pass without retribution."
"I respect Miranda, but unlike the rest of these clackers I do not fear her." taking a nervous sip of water, "Besides what's the worst she'll do...huh...fire me." Serena wasn't an idiot. She knew Miranda could make her life a living hell if she so desire.
Giving her a dumbfounded look, "You are the newest Art Director, Serena, for the world's leading institute of fashion ." grabbing a hold of her shoulders, "Are you really ready to sacrifice it all for her?"
"Thanks for the advice, Jay, but I am really sick of talking about my relationship with Andy. Being hounded by the press is all that I can handle at the moment." moving back to organizing the clothes, "Now let's finish preparing for the run-through..." looking at her watch "Which starts in about 30 minutes."
"Fine." granting Serena reprieve "But don't say I didn't warn you."
***********
Ten hours later Serena, arrived to Andy's quaint Manhattan apartment. Using her to key to unlock the door, she immediately made her way to the bedroom to greet her girlfriend. "Hey gorgeous," leaning down to kiss Andy as she sat in front of the vanity, "Miranda has some kind of soiree to attend, so I have the night off."
"I have this thing I have to attend with Christian Thomas, but I don't plan on staying long." wiggling her eyebrows "You should wait up and we'll finish what we started in the shower this morning."
Looking into beautiful chestnut eyes through the mirror, "Are you sure you can't reschedule?" softly kissing her earlobe, "We've barely had time together, since you've been back." Andy leaned into Serena's touch. "I will make it worth your wild."
"We'll eat, mingle for a bit, perhaps a dance or two and then I'm all yours," she said putting on the final touches of makeup.
Serena smirked, "Fine." removing her clothes to get in the shower, "Don't keep me waiting to long."
Andy stood to follow Serena, "You're not playing fair." tracing her finger over her dark skin, "I have to leave soon."
"You don't have to do anything," she purred "I can be much more entertaining than Christian Thomas." squeezing Andy's ass through her gown "Your tits look amazing in this dress."
"Oh they do...huh." teasing Serena.
Serena nodded. "Uh huh..." sliding her hands up Andy's torso and stroking her thumbs over nipples. "I love your breast...they're so voluptuous."
A Buzz rang out alerting them of her date's arrival. "Later." between kisses "Ahhh...don't...forget...wait up." Serena held on to Andy's waist as she deepened the kiss. "Hmm" moaning into her mouth "Rio I have to go." After giving the Brazilian one last quick peck, Andy snatched up her clutch and headed downstairs to meet Christian.
***********
"You ready to charm a room full of snobs?" Christian asked Andy as he extended his hand to help her out the car.
"I have nothing better to do on a Friday night," she mocked.
"Try to have some fun." leaning in as he placed his hand on her lower back "Otherwise we will have to do this again."
Smiling as the camera flashes went off, "I said I would accompany you to the event. I didn't say I would enjoy myself."
"Andrea," a young reporter shouted, "Is this your new beau?"
Turning towards Christian who looked immaculate in his Armani tux, "No. Mr. Thompson is a dear friend of mine." smiling charmingly, "Now if you will excuse us, we must head inside." From the outside they appeared to be the perfect couple. He complimented the young movie star's good taste with his handsome features. Andy chose to wear a simple black gown by Valentino. The dress is the epitome of elegance and sophistication. Before Christian led them inside, Andy allowed them to snap a few more photos, "Have a good night." Over the years she learned it was best to be as cordial as possible when dealing with the media, especially the paparazzi, which proved to be difficult at times. All eyes turned to focus on them as they entered the luxurious dining hall. "I thought you said this event was for cancer awareness."
"Well...not exactly." pointing her in the direction of their table, "But you probably wouldn't have come had I told you it was a boring ball for no reason other than to schmooze with the rich and famous."
"You're probably right." After locating their table, Andy immediately felt sick to her stomach. She took notice that the other occupants of their table were non other than Miranda Priestly, Michael Henry, James Holt and Nigel Kipling. She was thankful to be seated between Christian and James. "Hello everyone," she greeted as Christian pulled out her chair. "You all remember Mr. Thompson." waving in Michael's direction, "Christian this is Michael. Michael this is Christian, a junior editor at the New York Times." They all exchanged curious looks. Andy turned her attention to James who was seated to her left, "So how is the new line coming along," she asked with genuine interest.
"Ohhh thanks for asking," taking a sip of his champagne as Miranda watched their exchange in amusement. His latest run-through could only be described as abysmal at best. Miranda left after 10 minutes. "We're experimenting with some new colors at the moment. You should drop by soon and check them out." Andy's style had improved significantly over the years, and her greatest asset was that she knew La Priestly better than anyone else. James accepted her input whenever needed with great appreciation, but lately they've been out of touch with Andy's hectic schedule.
"I would love to. The boys will be starting summer vacation soon, perhaps I could bring Gus along."
"That's cool." leaning in closer and nudging Andy, "So...you and Serena huh?"
Placing a hand on his arm, "I will fill you in on all the details when I stop by the boutique." She felt uneasy talking about Serena considering Miranda is sitting directly across from her. "Other then work how has everything been?"
"What else is there besides work," they laughed "Ohhh...Nigel and I are searching for a bigger place. Do you know of any good real estate agents?"
"No, but I will ask around." touching Christian's hand, "Would you like to grab a drink?"
"Yea." standing up "I could use a strong drink to warm my blood." grinning over at Miranda, "It's a bit chilly in here." For obvious reasons Andy and Christian's friendship cooled off when she and Miranda married. He seemed to love antagonizing her.
They quickly made their way through the crowd as the moved to reach the bar. "Please, don't do anything to piss Miranda off tonight." motioning for the bartender, "Four shots of tequila." he looked at her curiously, "What? We might as well have a good time."
"Sounds like a plan," he said as he tossed back his first shot. "You're full of surprises, Andy."
Throwing back her second shot, "I'll take that as a compliment." she said trying to ignore the burning sensation from the tequila, "We'll have two more." They continued to sit at the bar and catch up. As a public figure Andy's life was pretty much an open book, so there wasn't much tell on her part. Apparently Christian had a lot going on, since he saw fit to tell Andy everything that happened since last spoke a few weeks back. She noticed a crowd gathering around the dance floor towards the back of the room. From her seat she had a clear view of Miranda and Michael waltzing to Edith Piaf's "La Foule." The looked exquisite together. As she watched them glide across the dance floor, Andy couldn't help to think of the numerous times she and Miranda had danced to this song. "Chris you feel like getting some fresh air?"
Looking over to Andy. "Can't stand to see the old lady swaying to someone else's groove?" he joked.
"Don't be an asshole." dropping a couple of bills on the counter-top, "I'll need a bottle of champagne to go, please."
"Sure." grabbing a bottle from the top shelf, "Anything for you, Andrea." The bartender was obviously smitten with Andy. "I should be getting off in a couple of hours. Would you like to get together?"
"Thanks" taking the bottle, "You're cute. If I wasn't already taken I might take you up on your offer." She slipped off the stool and headed in the direction of the balcony. The only problem with her plan of escape is that she has to pass the dance floor along the way. Andy did her best to avoid glancing in Miranda's direction. Practice has perfected her skill. It doesn't happen often, but on the rare occasion that it does, Andy likes to be aware that they were attending the same event. Before she avoided her because things were so tense between them, now she's doing it because she's having a difficult time keeping her hands off of Miranda. Talk about changing the script. Miranda looks ravenous in her vintage Oscar de la Renta gown, which doesn't help to cool Andy's raging hormones. She has always had this affect on Andy, causing Andy to unravel at the seam. Even when things were most acrimonious between them, she has maintained a sense of control over her.
Christian admired Andy as she leaned over the railing gazing out at the New York skyline. Approaching her from behind, "What's on your mind?"
"Not really thinking of anything in particular," lifting the bottle to her lips and taking a swig. "I am just being."
Reaching out to take the bottle, "You're weird. You know that." It was something intangible about the brunette that attracted Christian. Sure she was beautiful and successful, but that wasn't what pulled him in. "So the old lady has gotten under your skin. I can't believe you're still hung up on her. You could have your pick of anybody male or female to bed." taking a sip "What happened?" passing the bottle back, "Don't look at me like that. I saw how you were oggling her."
"What do you mean 'what happened?' " she said accepting the champagne.
"You're obviously still into her. So why divorce?" he replied.
"The million dollar question," taking another swig from the bottle, "This stays between us."
"Scouts honor," he said with a wry grin.
"It's really quite boring." passing the bottle back to him, "Did you see the photos?" he nodded. You had to be living in complete isolation not to. Even if you had no access to a television or computer, the radio personalities were more than willing to discuss the juicy details surrounding the Mirandy breakup. "Well the thing with Nate was just the final straw. We had been problems for a while..." she turned towards him pulling the pins from her hair allowing her long lockes to fall. Christian almost choked on the champagne as he stared at her in awe. Andy had never looked so beautiful than in this moment, "I have a hard time pointing to a single incident. Like most relationships it accumulated over time. Spending months away from your spouse can be difficult, especially when said spouse is Miranda Priestly."
"So you're telling me you never got it on with any of your co-stars?" he had a hard time believing Andy. There were always rumor circulating insinuating an elicit affair with a co-star or personal assistant.
"No, not that it wasn't tempting, especially when things between Miranda and I were difficult." She was propositioned on numerous occasions by both men and women. Sexual harassment came along with territory, "Up until the boys started school I would bring them along with me when I was away on location. It helped to have them there when I was gone for long periods of time." Being away from her family for three months at a time filming took its toll, notwithstanding the work that goes into promoting a film, which only added to the already fragile relationship.
"Did she ever accuse you of cheating?" he asked.
"Explicitly? No." Sometimes Miranda would ignore Andy for weeks at a time, leaving them to exchange messages through her assistants. "But I am sure she had her suspicions." she snorted "That much was clear. I guess I got used to it after a while." About three years ago TMZ released a picture of Andy and the leading male having dinner at an exclusive restaurant in Paris. Miranda ignored her phone calls for two weeks straight. She eventually had to fly home in order to explain the entire situation to Miranda about her co-star being gay and how she was only consoling him after he had a fight with his boyfriend over coming out of the closet. Andy quickly grew tired of having to defend herself for the sake of avoiding an argument and she simply refused to discuss anything relating to the tabloids.
"Miranda doesn't strike me as the insecure type. The woman exudes confidence. Why would she be concerned with stupid gossip?" he said.
"Not usually, but the subject off infidelity has always been a sore one for us, since the conception of our relationship." Andy knew that the issue was based on the fact that she so much younger than Miranda, and as her popularity grew things became more difficult with everyone wanting a piece of Andrea Priestly. Her mistake was thinking that she could counter this by working harder to make a name for herself. "What can you offer a woman that has everything her heart desires?"
He shrugged, "Beats me."
Andy snorted, "Me too, Chris. I just wanted to able to offer her something...you know...be her equal." The topic of discussion obviously required the skill of someone far better than himself, and he was no Barbara Walters.
Christian didn't expect Andy to turn into a wilted flower, after all they had been divorced for quite some time now, but then again Miranda has always been a mood killer where he and Andy were concerned. In an attempt to lighten the mood he said, "Let's have some fun," placing the bottle down, "Dance with me Miranda girl."
Taking his hand, "Why not? You've been a good boy."
They could hear the music drifting through the crack doors. "Allow me to charm you," he whispered as he pulled her into his arms. Andy laid her head on his shoulder as they swayed, listening to Christian sing along to the song. To Andy's surprise, he actually had a nice voice. "It's not the pale moon that excites me...That thrills and delights me," looking into Bambi-like eyes, "Oh no, It's just the nearness of you." She allowed herself to melt into his arms, relishing the feeling of their closeness and the smell of his cologne. She blocked out the noise coming from the busy streets of New York below them. "I need no soft lights to enchant me...If you would only grant me... the right to hold you ever so tight...And to feel you in the night" tilting his head to place a soft kiss on Andy's forehead, "Thanks gorgeous."
"You're welcome." she replied with a huge grin, "You're actually a great dancer."
Spinning her around, "I didn't even get a chance to break out my best moves." The laughed as Christian led Andy around the balcony.
"Bravo! Bravo!" Nigel said from the doorway, "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
"Of course not," Andy said pulling away from Christian.
Christian glared at Nigel, obviously irritated by his intrusion, "Is there anything we can help you with?"
"Actually I would like to speak with Six, if you don't mind."
"Sure," he snorted as he walked pass Nigel, "I have to use the bathroom anyway."
***********
"What's up, Nigel?"
"I could ask you the same thing." waving his hand around, "What are you doing with Christian. I thought you were with Serena. You can't continue to lead people on,Six. I can't believe-"
"Hold on." cutting off his rant, "I am here with Christian as a friend."
"Not from where I stand. What I just saw-"
"And what is it you saw?" holding up her hand to stop a response, "That's a rhetorical question." taking a moment a calm her nerves, "I'm not sure what you thought you saw, but let me tell you that nothing romantic is happening between Christian and myself. He asked me to accompany him to the event and I accepted....And not that I have to explain myself to you of all people, but the feelings I have for Serena are real."
Nigel laughed at her last part, "So serious that you're still screwing Miranda."
Andy's nostrils flared at his comment, "Fuck you, Nigel." She couldn't believe Miranda was discussing the prior matter of their relationship with Nigel. "I have moved on and so has Miranda," pointing in the direction of the ballroom, "As you can see she seems to be perfectly happy with Michael."
"Oh please spare me, Andy. While my skin may be as soft as an infant, I was not born yesterday. Even a blind man can see that you still have feelings for Miranda. I consider Serena a friend and I don't want to see her get mixed up in this dysfunctional thing you got going with Miranda. It's only a matter of time before you end up in her bed again or the other way around."
She was tipsy and having a difficult time keeping her temper under control. "Have you ever thought that she was stringing me along?" Nigel didn't respond, "I'll take your silence as a no," staring down at the traffic below them, "Don't get me wrong I don't think she's using me, but I'm not delusional either. Serena and Emily were together for years. I doubt her feelings for Em have dissipated simply because we're-"
"But Serena isn't sleeping with Emily." Nigel he said as he came to stand beside Andy, "I know Miranda almost as well as you do. She still loves you, Andy. Don't be stupid. Go to her and tell her that this whole thing with Serena is a...a terrible lapse in judgment."
"I will do no such thing. What happened between me and Miranda was a mistake and it won't happen again." turning to towards the well dressed man, "Serena and I have found something in each other and I am pursuing it. She's a grown woman, Nigel. She can make her own decisions. I'm certainly not forcing her to be with me." stepping away from Nigel as she turned to enter the ballroom, "Please excuse me, Mr. Kipling, but I am keeping someone waiting."
"Six..." Andy ignored Nigel as she made her way inside.
***********
After locating Christian to inform him that she was leaving, Andy placed a call to Mark, "I'm at MOMA. Meet me outside in ten." Andy found Miranda waiting outside at the bottom of the steps. "Hey," she greeted as she moved to stand in front of Miranda.
"You've been avoiding me," It was an honest statement, after all Andy practically spent the entire time on the balcony. "Is it that difficult to be around me?"
"I didn't expect to see you here." she replied. "And yes...yes it is difficult to be around you."
"That doesn't explain your decision to ignore me, Andrea." looking directly into brown orbs. "I thought we were making progress..."
"I came with Christian," ignoring the change in Miranda's posture at the mention of his name, "Besides you were with Michael." 'Where is he anyway?' she thought. "I didn't think he would appreciate my presence, especially after everything..." she trailed off.
"As you can see, Michael is not around." stepping closed, "There was some kind of financial emergency and he had to fly to London." placing her hand on Andy's cheek, "Come with me."
"And what will happen if I leave with you?" leaning into Miranda's touch.
"Nothing we both don't want to happen, Andrea." Andy felt herself getting lost in the deepest shade of blue.
"I can't, Mira." gently removing Miranda's hand, "Serena's expecting me." Miranda was like quick sand and Andy couldn't allow herself to be sucked in. "I'll see you in the morning when I come to retrieve Gus and Drew." Miranda nodded as she stepped away. A black Mercedes, almost an identical make of Andy's car, pulled up to the curb. Roy ran around to open the door for Miranda. She climbed in without saying another word to Andy. As soon as they left, Mark pulled up. Without waiting for him to get out, she opened the door and climbed in the backseat, "Home." was the only thing uttered the entire time on the way to her apartment.
**********
After taking off her gown and washing her face, Andy slipped into bed behind Serena. She felt her stiffen as she wrapped her arms around her, "Hey" placing a kiss behind her ear, "I know I'm a bit late, but I was hoping to pick up where we left off." Serena rolled over and Andy could tell she'd been crying, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing...just a tough day that's all." wrapping her arm around Andy's midsection. "Did you have fun?"
"I would have had more fun here with you," softly stroking Serena's cheek with her thumb, "Now are you going to tell me what's bothering you or do I have to force it out of you."
"I was just thinking about something Emily said earlier." she replied.
Andy rolled her eyes at the mention of her nemesis. 'Well there goes my plans for sex.' she thought. "And what exactly did Emily say?" not that she really wanted to know. History taught her that anything from the redhead meant bad news, but it obviously upset Serena so she was curious.
"I don't think you want to hear every little detail of our conversation," she snorted, "The purpose of her phoning was to tell me that I was a fool for getting involved with you."
Andy leaned in and pressed her full lips against Serena, "She's right." another kiss, "You deserve so much more than I can give you," a kiss "But tell me...." another kiss, "What do you think?"
"I don't know." capturing Andy's bottom lip, "When you kiss me like that I get confused...I can't think straight." stroking her hand through the brunette's hair, "I want you, but I'm scared..."
Andy leaned back, "Look at me, Rio." taking a moment to pause while she gathered her thoughts, "The fantasy is what people want, but reality is what they need." sitting up against the headboard, "Being with me is not easy. My life is not easy. I am constantly traveling. In addition to the possessive fans, there's the outlandish rumors that are in constant circulation to take into account. If you're having doubts, I think it's best you sorted them out now."
Waving her off, "That's not what I'm talking about. I know all the other stuff comes along with the package...what I am concerned about is...Miranda."
"What...I don't understand." Andy replied in honest confusion, "Miranda will always be there. She's the mother of my children, Serena. What do you expect?" trying not to sound defensive.
Rolling over to turn the lamp on as she sat up next to Andy,"I know that...but do ...do you still want her?" taking a deep breath, "I need to know that you're not just going to leave me hanging if she decides she wants to give it another try."
"And you're asking me this now. All because of Emily, your jealous ex," taking a deep breath, "Well you don't have to worry, because she doesn't. OK. It's over."
"I don't think I can stop myself from wanting you and I'm not going to try," she said straddling Andy, "Who cares what anybody else has to say..." kissing along her jawline, "I want you, Andy. Let me have you."
Andy stilled Serena's movement by grabbing her arms, "All that matters is what you think..." trying to ignore the urge to pin Serena against the mattress, "So tell me...Are you sure?" Serena answered her with a passionate kiss, "Hmmm....I'll take that as a yes." rolling them over so that she was hovering above Serena, "I want you to remember that I could be anywhere else, but I'm here with you."
"I'm glad you came home," she said as Andy pressed her thigh between her legs. Adding pressure to that special spot that cause her body to arch into Andy's touch.
"No place I'd rather be," Andy replied with a mischief grin, "Now can I show you how much I missed you today. After all you're the one who left me hanging this morning."
"Oh yes.." pulling Andy down, "Please show me." Andy concentrates on the woman laying beneath her. Putting all of her energy into reassuring her, knowing that this will more than likely not be the last time they have this conversation, but hoping the next won't be for some time to come. Far removed from her previous life as Andy Sachs, she has come to accept the things she can not change and remains optimistic that things will eventually fall into place as they should be. The problem is she doesn't know how they should be....

I have a vacation coming up and hope to update this very soon.
