Part I
"...I would despite you, hate you till you die; yet I would not be able to forget you..."

The year of 2007

It has been about 3 years since the rising gods of the east debuted, and their popularity just never seemed to stop from the moment they were formed. Fans supported from different countries, although there were numerous controversies against them, but they were still at the top.

But this was just too much for Jihye, the girlfriend of Changmin had since they studied in High School together. It was her that encouraged him to showcase and attend the auditions for SME, and now she regretted ever since. Not only did he started to leave school studies for more time to practice, to attend shows and performances, but there simply wasn’t enough time for the two to meet up for dates and little meetings. And to their dismay, they were found very early into the relationship by fans. With no official statement nor denial, mixed reaction came about. But either way, Jihye’s lifestyle has changed dramatically. Fans took quite a vigorous approach, as they shoved food and presents at her so that she could transfer them to the rest of the members. While others tried blackmailing and threatening her through her Cyworld and various internet portal.

This new chaotic life of hers, she could no longer stand it. There was a time when she was at the verge of breaking point. Changmin caught her just in time, as he hurried into her bedroom, he found her busy stuffing clothes into her traveler’s bag, planned to run away from Seoul and forever reside in the country side with her grandmother. If it wasn’t for the heated kisses, tugged shirt and the drop of her dress, she would have left the city hours before she was once again trapped under his strong arms. She recalled how she woke up naked; his lean arms wrapped around her waist and pressed her tightly against his body. And she was smiling - probably giggling back then - and kissed his chest. But now, she wanted nothing more than to wipe those memories away, because it was time to move on.

If she wanted a new life style, she had got to move on. How ironic it was that a piece of paper could change her life. An offer letter from York to study English aboard along with a three year scholarship, this was definitely a once in a life time chance. Although the school wouldn’t be as prestigious as Oxford and Cambridge, the university was known for its excellence in English courses. And this was her only chance to escape.

Even if he were to stop her, she couldn’t. Even if she knew she loved him with equal passion back, she wanted to leave. Away, just anywhere but here, away from this place. And to accomplish that goal, she wouldn’t tell a soul, or else her new freedom would be forever shattered.

Her brain was clear for the new future, but yet her heart lingered on and stayed stubbornly rooted for the life she’s used to. She knew what he meant to her, and back. She missed the times where it was just him and her alone in the streets, laughing like maniacs after a good meal at the barbeque house. If she said she didn’t miss those moments, she was one big liar. But she knew if she was to see Changmin the day she leaves, she would hesitate and he -being a smooth talker- would be able to persuade her to stay.

In the end, Jihye informed his brother to only tell Changmin 5 minutes before her flight was due. So that he would definitely miss her flight, yet she would have told him she’s left for good…indirectly.

Riding inside her brother’s car was very uncomfortable, as the two siblings stayed quiet for quite a long time before Yunho broke the awkward silence.

“Jihye-ah, you don’t regret? 정말?”

Jihye who had her face turned at her side window throughout the whole ride, cleared her throat before she answered weakly, “바보야? Of course I do, but this is the only way to be.” She smiled bleakly at her brother before she returned to preserving her last memory of Seoul.

Fingers brushed the window pane as though she was touching the buildings, the bridges and the familiar streets as the car sped through. “I…miss you.” She whispered aimlessly, yet both passengers knew who that phrase really was directed towards. Soon enough, the two reached Incheon Airport. Yunho slipped on his shades and zipped up his coat before he stepped out of his car, and stiffly went to the trunk to collect her luggage.

“This is it, Jihye. This is the furthest I can let take you to…I’ll miss you, you little rascal!” Yunho drew her in for a bear hug, they weren’t close for nothing. Jihye buried her head to avoid Yunho spotting her tears. “나도” They were best friends when they were mere children, and now to be separated for over 8,881 kilometers apart had proved it not to be easy. Yunho kissed her forehead lightly, “email me frequently, promise?” Jihye only had the strength to nod and pulled away before any fans recognized her brother. As he drove away, she waved until he vanished as a spot into the distance.

Jihye sighed and heaved her travel bag until it rested against the handles of the luggage, and together she pulled the two packages along with her into the airport.

“YAH! SHIM CHANGMIN, YOU BETTER WAKE UP, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I’VE EVER BROKEN A PROMISE WITH JIHYE! SHE’S LEAVING IN 2 HOURS DO YOU HEAR? YOU BETTER FUCKING GET YOURSELF TOGETHER AT THE AIRPORT BEFORE SHE LEAVES” Sprang to life, Changmin forgot all sleepiness when the other end of the phone started to shout at the innocent him. “무 슨? She never mentioned a word!”

“Obviously she didn’t want to see your face when she leaves, or so she says! I know my sister much better than you, brat. Now go! If I see your ass in the dormitory, don’t even think about fo-..” That was enough to get Changmin going, stumbled upon his slippers, grabbed the nearest jacket and passport, and ran out the door without announcing his leave.

Later than he wished, he finally arrived at the airport. After paying much more money than necessary and ignored the bewildered driver who handed him the change, Changmin just ran aimlessly towards the entrance of the airport. Without a disguise, a few fans already spotted the uncollected Changmin searching frantically around.

He couldn’t have cared less; all he needed was to see Jihye, knock some sense in her mind and stop her from leaving. Whenever he spotted someone who resembled his lover, he would reach for their arms and pull them back to identify them clearly. The last woman he grabbed yelped and gave him a great swing with her handbag.

But there was no time to apologize; he had less than 45 minutes to find that girl.

She had no idea what she was waiting for, but her body refused to move from her seat. The spot chosen was near the check in counter. Was it her lack of courage or was she just being naively hopeful to wait for Changmin to turn up? Motionless, she simply stared at the distance; she had seen several flights soared through the sky.

Was it a right choice to make? Should I take my flight away from home too?

She could hear screams around the airport, as though there were celebrities that fans were waiting for. But what does it matter to her? She knew the boys didn’t have a flight scheduled for today, hence the choice of flying today. Away, away from you.

“You have 30 minutes till the end of boarding flight towards London, Heathrow”

Tears started to form around her eyes; she knew this was stupid, thinking that someone would stop her, like in those sappy, romance movies. She hastily wiped her tears against the back of her hand, stood up, rummaged through her bag, and felt for the boarding pass.

“JUNG JIHYE!”

The exact moment she was about to hand over her ticket for freedom, her chaotic life and childhood memories, Jihye heard her name. She stopped at the familiar voice, mixed emotions ran through her body, dreading yet wanting it to be Changmin, made her nose felt sour. Blinking back the tears, she pushed forward to the flight hostess with trembled hands.

“Please…please…”

Changmin knew she was trying to avoid him. “YAH! JIHYE!! JUNG JIHYE!” He ran towards her, snatched the ticket out of the bewildered employer’s hand and forced her aside.

“Why!”

She turned her head away, purposely ignoring Changmin as he asked her the simple question again and again. “Why!” He shook her a great deal and yet she was limp under his force. She didn’t know what to do, her mind was blank, and no matter how much he questioned her, she was scared of what her mouth would speak against her heart’s will.

Until several times later, she tore herself out of his hold and slapped his hands away. It took her a few moments before she gained her strength to look at him in the eye. Tears were building up at the corners of her eyes once more, “Have you ever crossed your mind that - I don’t like you anymore?”

His hands dropped, slid from her arms. Jihye bit her tongue; she knew Changmin would be hurt. But her heart was hurting not a degree less than his. It took her few weeks to decide, and she had to choose this path. It was Changmin’s turn to look at her in the eye. Eyes darted from side to side, trying to absorb every single expression she’s portraying, he tried hard to decipher her.

She tried to stable her gaze upon him, tried to hide truth from him. But she couldn’t fool him, not especially when he knew her for so long; he knew every move from her. With tears threatening to flow down her smooth cheeks, and her eyes darting everywhere but him, the latter knew she was lying, yet it was so frustrating that she thought she might have a chance to get away from it.

“Lies.”

He drew one hand behind her head and pulled her towards him. Changmin slid his thumb under her right eye. “Lies, the fact that you told Yunho hyung to inform me at the last minute, so that I wouldn’t felt hurt, is your way of showing love to me.”

“You really thought I would forget you if you just escape like that? I would hate you, I would despite you, hate you till you die; yet I would not be able to forget you, banish the hurt you inflicted on me and erase the memories, nor replace you with just anyone in my heart.”

“바보야. Did you know my heart was bleeding when you said those words?” His voice sound choked, as though he held back the tears. Changmin placed her palm in his and pulled it towards his heart. “I know you love me, and I don’t want you to feel so burdened because of me.”

Jihye opened her mouth to protest, but Changmin silenced her with his own kiss. Capturing her pink lips, he placed a chaste kiss upon hers. Their lips lingered before Changmin pulled away once again.

Changmin then pulled her into his arms; circling her waist, “I’ll wait, no matter if it’s 3 years or 10 years. I’ll wait for you.”

Tears formed around her eyes, she wanted to push away, she could not believe how selfish she was, yet Changmin could still forgive her and wait.

She tried to break loose, yet Changmin secured her tightly against his chest. Jihye rained his chest with showers of fist, yet that didn’t make him let go. Instead, he tightened his grasp upon her, propped his chin upon her head and murmured.

“I love you.”

Upon those words she stopped, froze, stiffed against his warmth. “Don’t.”

“I love you, from the bottom of my heart.”

“Don’t. Please. 제발 Just forget about me.”

“I can’t, I won’t, nor would I be able to. You’ve bewitched me.”

She closed her eyes; she could not ease her tears falling, as it slid down her smooth cheeks and dripped onto Changmin’s jacket.

“All passengers, last fifteen minutes boarding the flight from Seoul, Incheon Airport to London, Heathrow Airport.”

She buried her head into his arms once last time, before she murmured.

“This, this is my call.”

Jihye leaned back, encircled her hands behind Changmin’s neck. She inched forward and pressed her lips upon his, Changmin took the chance to deepen the kiss. As they gasped for air, Changmin pressed his forehead with hers.

“I love you, and I know this is important for you. And if you believe in us- believe in me - and believe we can still be together. On the 18th of February in 4 years time, meet me at the top floor of N Seoul tower. I’ll wait for you, I don’t care how long it will be, I’ll wait for you.”

Jihye looked up and only nodded and before she headed towards the flight with entwined hands. She broke their bond, handed over her boarding pass and slowly turned to him before she started to walk into the customs. Waving ever so slowly, she took each step gravely and gave one last longing look before her brown hair swept into the entrance of her new found freedom.

Goodbye my love. I’ll wait, no matter how long it takes.
