For many years I have wanted to have a Madmax car. That is the yellow V8 intercepter that Max (Mel Gibson) drives at the beginning of the first Madmax (Road Warrior) movie. Finally I'm able to afford to make the dream a reality. On Saturday I collected a car from Matamata which will be slowly transformed over about 12 months. The car is a 1979 Ford Fairmont. It has been used as a show car and hired out for weddings etc. The 351 (5.8 litre) V8 has less than 1000km on a re-build. The motor is mildy "worked" with a steel crank, lumpy cam, Holley 650 cfm carburettor, Edelbrock inlet manifold. The exhaust is far too loud, there are no mufflers only a Koby resonator on each 2.5inch pipe. Although the motor is rather silly for what I need the car is rust free and has new suspension, steering and brakes which is worth a lot, much more than what I paid for it.
The drive to Wellington was rather intense, requiring a lot of concentration. The 265 tyres on the front are far too wide and in typical 70s Ford fashion the steering is far too light, coupled with something in the region of 300+ horsepower made it 'interesting'. The car literaly shakes at the lights, EVERYONE looks, actually there was one guy stopped on the side of the desert road who didn't look, but take my word for it everyone else from Matamata to Wellington looked.
