Among some of the more questionable things Christine ODonnell (O'Donnell?) has said is her more recent statement that "God is praying for me
( Read more... )
Albeit simple, her statement has merit in Christian theology. Remember, Christians believe that God is a single entity comprised of three persons, namely the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. In Scripture, there are references to the Son and the Holy Spirit praying on our behalf.
Heb 7:25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Ro 8:26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words
Yes, it sounds crazy. But her statement is consistent with Christian belief.
Hmm... But she didn't say Jesus was praying for her. Or that the Spirit was praying for her... And even so, I don't really think of intercession as being a prayer which is motivated from Jesus or the Spirit, but rather a sort of interpretive filter before YOUR prayer reaches God. Jesus/Spirit acting like the user interface for the almighty God.
Sorry, it's a bit hard to describe. I don't mean that Jesus is some kind of holy mail sorting center, but that He (or the Spirit in your second verse) provides a comprehensible, solid means for us to access God who is beyond comprehension.

In orthodox/conservative Christanity, Jesus = God; and Holy Spirit = God.

The Scriptures I quoted above make an important distinction between Jesus and me, and the Holy Spirit and me. Each one personally accomplished and accomplishes something in the process of intercession that I cannot do by myself, namely prayer and advocacy (cf. 1 Jn 2:1). These are specific roles involving actions carried out by someone who is not me. So I can't view the divine Persons as merely an interface for the ineffable.
