Abraham - Isaac - Jacob
Abraham - Isaac - Jacob - Joseph
Isaac was Abraham's 2nd Son, and he was also the Father of Jacob -- his own '2nd son' (because Esau was the first-born of the twins, who "grabbed Jacob's heel'). Gen25:26 KJV
The father-to-son progression began in Gen5 where Noah was the 10th -- his son Shem led the way to Abraham who was 20th. Chr1:24-27. Noah was "perfect in his generations", Gen6:9. The third group of ten generations is found in the ending of the Book of Ruth, which concludes with the name of David. However, three names had been skipped (Isaac, Jacob, Judah), so David's generation is actually #33.
The twins born to Judah, Gen38, were named Zarah and Pharez after a strange detailed birth involving the tying of a red cloth around the wrist of Zerah the firstborn. Not until we learned how it was Judah who led the way to David (and to Jesus), did we come to understand how the Joseph in Egypt was NOT in the pedigree of Christ. (...Neither the Joseph husband of Mary.)
Interesting to me is how Zerah's family wound up in the fire after the Battle of Jericho, Josh7:1, while the 2nd son Pharez was leading the generation trail to David and Jesus, as we see from Ruth4:18.
Considering how the Book of Genesis details the four generations ofAbraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, we have a right to wonder why Joseph wasn't included in this phrase, seeing as how his story encompasses so much (~ten chapt) of the book.
but I digress..
We know all about that Jacob, but we know NOTHING about the Jacob in Matt 1:16 who is listed as the father of Joseph, except that he was the son of Matthan (another unknown). It is interesting to note though, that the name of Jacob is THE ONLY name in all the names in the pedigree of Jesus that is repeated. We have a Jacob#1 and a Jacob#2 (but of course there are other names in scripture which are used more than once). And the first Enoch and first Lamech were in the generations of Cain, so they don't count.
An interesting study is to compare the twice-used copycat names ( two persons named: Enoch, Lamech, Jacob, Lazarus, Adah, Noah, Joann, John, Shelah, etc.) with the multiple names like Joseph, Mary, James, Philip, Simon and with the names used only once. Strange, isn't it, why fine names like Ruth or Deborah,or David or Samuel, hadn't been adopted or copied by the New Testament couples.
Jacob has been the most popular boys name in the U.S. for the past 7 yrs. -- the one in the Bible, BTW, is not a deceiver as some are teaching, but his name means 'supplanter' (to take the place of..) according to Gen27:36. And Esau is a liar -- see Heb12:16.
"Understandest what thou readest? Acts8:30
So, have we grasped how the Father and the Son could actually be the same person?? Can we say "Elementary, My Dear Watson"? -- As Ripley said: "Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction". amen?
