New Job (part 2)

I got an interview with SOS staffing services for a temp to hire position the end of April. The guy at the company said the girl they were replacing was still looking for a full time position so she hadn't officially quit yet, but that they'd let me know when she left. I kind of wonder if they didn't hire someone else. I have to admit I didn't really want to work for them any way. The company sold structural steel and the guy I interviewed with admitted the language might be more colorful that what I was used to in a working environment. And I really don't want to get another permanent job, because I always feel guilty for quitting. (I've been lucky enough to have worked in socially pleasant jobs.

A week from yesterday (Friday, May 13) I received a call from Manpower. They needed someone to go to a PTA convention and gather up fund-raising information/pamphlets for a client. I wasn't told outright, but I was pretty sure I was getting this stuff for a competing fund-raising company. When I told Chalain, he said, "Cool, you get to do corporate espionage!" I was a little nervous because I had to pretend to be from a PTA affiliated with an out of state school. I'm a terrible liar - I get nervous and guilty just thinking about lying, so this job was not an easy one for me starting out. There were a lot of other legitimate people there gathering up info for the local schools so I wasn't conspicuous at all. I went in telling everyone that I was new and didn't really know what I was doing - I was just the "go for" girl to gather up fund-raising stuff. The area they had the vendors in was so packed that I just went with the crowd from booth to booth. I was told by the client to watch out for a couple of ladies from a certain competing company and if they were at their booth to not go there because they were very familiar with the school I was pretending to be with. I didn't even realize I had encountered one of these ladies until after I'd been asked what school I was with and she said to her co-worker "Oh hey, she's from XX school. That's right in your area." I then read her name tag and did a mental "Oh, no!" with her all the time asking if we couldn't talk about the school and PTA. I removed my self as quickly as I possibly could. I was a good girl and stayed away from the chocolate and cookie samples and hurried back to Manpower to deliver the "goods".

I'm currently working on another assignment from Manpower in the exciting job of data entry. I get to watch video tape and enter in license plate numbers so the DOT can send out surveys to drivers and track traffic flow. I started Wednesday and get to do it for about another 4 weeks. It's not too boring because the guy who sits next to the lady who sits next to me likes to talk and he's kind of interesting, and so is the lady. I'm going to start bringing my tunes though because we're running out of things to talk about, and I know I slow down entering stuff when I'm talking to him. Yippee...
