I have started a new website, Lightbringers, dedicated to science, technology and society from a Unitarian and Univeralist perspective
( Read more... )
hmmmm, nice idea, but the introduction to the website is somewhat judgemental and dismissive of other religions and old texts, and I think it is possible to be more open minded and to see some wisdom in ancient texts, even whilst judging what is historical artifact and what is a deeper and more relevant truth about humanity and interpersonal interactions where humanity has changed little over the centuries
( ... )
I think the introduction's wording is a bit of a turn-off, too. It's one thing to say "we seek to understand using science as one of many tools" or "most religions try to fit what's discovered into their creed, but we analyze discoveries to inform our creed as part of a living religion" -- but it's another to say, "Conservative and traditional religious doctrines are poorly equipped to deal with the future." Too specific an argument for too general a category. And many religions have managed to stick around for quite a long time, so they've got experience adjusting doctrine to the future.
I do love the idea! The website looks good from the main page. Meshing UUism and societal studies and technology, etc. is both doable and filling a niche. A lot of UU discussion on the web seems either political issue-specific or too vague for my taste, and I suspect I'm not the only one. I'd love to see how this develops!
There is a very obvious line between commenting upon, and being aware of, a culture's religious practises and beliefs, and actually using them when one not part of that religion.
Although, one can presume ignorance rather than malice...

Good ol' Francis David.
Alas, I often find that contemporary conservative religions do not stand on the side of love by any stretch of the imagination.
Trashing the others isn't terribly helpful for anyone...
After all, they're so good at it themselves :)
