Of all the things Mary Winchester never did, this is the worst: that she let four children die whilst she played with her own baby.

Seven years after she turned her back on the world in which she had grown up, Mary had a life that wasn’t perfect but was everything she had ever wanted. Her husband worked an honest job and come home to her every night. Her son laughed and cried and ate and slept and would grow up never knowing the darkness that crept into every shadowed corner.

When little Jesse Collins died, everyone was sad. Like the other mothers, she passed a grateful hand over her child’s head. Like the other mothers, she went to church and prayed for Jesse. Like the other mothers, she had quiet conversations about how devastating it must be, losing your baby.

Two days after that, Nicky Porter died as well. Like the other mothers, Mary passed a grateful hand over her child’s head. Like the other mothers, she went to church and prayed for Nicky, and had quiet conversations about how devastating it must be, losing your baby.

Unlike the other mothers, Mary recognised the beginning of a pattern, because both those little boys went to the newly built playground in Lawrence, and more than one mother complained about unusual chills.

Mary didn’t investigate further. She didn’t look into the history of the land on which the playground had been built, though she thought it likely someone had died there. She didn’t talk to anyone about it, because who would believe her? She stayed at home with Dean, and hoped that someone would take care of it before anyone else’s child died.

Someone must have taken care of it eventually, because the deaths stopped. And Mary lived her life that wasn’t perfect but was everything she had ever wanted, and tried to forget Jesse and Nicky, and Joshua and Petey. And if sometimes, late at night, she wondered if having this life was worth becoming the person she was, all she needed to do was look at John or Dean to know the answer.
