COACHELLA ARTIST RATING PROJECT - Day 1

Feb 28, 2010 12:24

this is a rating of the coachella artists on a scale of 1-5 kernels (
-

).

i'm keeping an eye out for at least one popular song by the band on their artist pages or the forums. the band names link to their homepage, or the best homepage i could find for them. a lot of bands are retarded and don't have easy to find bios for whatever reasons. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!??! seems like a reasonable question to answer on your home page...

i'll post a final, public list when i'm done. i did try to utilize suggestions from pants' "Educate Others on the Lineup Thread" from the Coachella Message Boards, but please feel free to correct anything i have wrong or recommend tracks that would be a better representation of the band :)

coachella: day 1
friday, april 16th

Jay-Z

Jigga What, Jigga Who & 99 Problems (live)

i'm excited to see jay-z. i had tickets to see the hard knock life tour in high school, but they day of my friend got grounded & i certainly wasn't about to go by myself. he's not someone i really listen to these days, but i know it's going to be a fun set of GETTING LOW!!!!!!!!!!!

LCD Soundsystem

Tribulations & All of My Friends (live)

i'm digging this. i'll have to listen to some more. but it doesn't seem like the vocals will be terrible live. and i know i've heard LCD before, but it never really stuck. i definitely want to hear more.

Them Crooked Vultures

Mind Eraser, No Chaser (live) & New Fang (live)

i'm not big into rock so i don't feel there's much i can say. it's good for what it is & a friend dragged me along to a show i wouldn't be too upset. i imagine we'll see a larger amount of sleeveless shirts in this crowd though.

Vampire Weekend

Cousins & Kids Don't Stand a Chance (live)

RAR, the cousins took forever to load, then finally came the singer and boy is he annoying. not worth the wait at all. i like the use of instruments, which is why this is at two kernels and not one.

deadmau5

Soma & Ghosts N' Stuff (live)

i've never seen deadmau5, so i would kinda like to check him out for once. there's always a conflict, but maybe there's a reason? we'll see when the timeslots come out. seems like a fun set!!!

Public Image Limited

Rise & Flowers of Romance (live)

Rise has always cracked me up. other than that, i have no interest in watching this. especially knowing it will most likely become a johnny rotten bitchfest. go back to selling butter for the brits.

The Specials

Too Much Too Young (live) & Stupid Marriage (live)

you know me, i've been skankin forever. but other than these two songs i don't listen to much of the specials these days. i do hope to catch their set though, i would love to skank on the polo fields!!!! they get four stars for helping to get me through high school, ska against racism was a blast!

Grizzly Bear

Two Weeks & While You Wait for the Others (live)

i can never decide if i like these guys or not. i think it's a little to meandering for me though which is why i decided on two stars.

Passion Pit

Sleepyhead & Little Secrets (live)

ahh, it's a bit much. sleepyhead makes my brain hurt. little secrets wasn't as bad though. just something off about all of it in general that doesn't work for me.

Echo and the Bunnymen

Yo-Yo Man (live) & Killing Moon (live)

i know they're old now, but i really can't wait to finally see these guys. killing moon on the polo fields will be awesome. i hope there's no conflicts!!!

Benny Benassi

Satisfaction & live (no idea what the track is)

so i WAS going to just grab my review from 2007... but i deleted my review of 2007 apparently. fuck. at any rate, i've never seen this guy, but would love to get low at least ONCE to this mother fucker, if only for a minute or two since i'm sure a whole set would be too much.

Fever Ray

When I Grow Up & Keep the Streets Empty for Me (live)

this seems like it will be so awesome live. i need more!!!!! i do wonder if i'd get bored with it after awhile, but it seems like she'd be a great performer to watch. she's committed, which i love. oh, and LASERS!!!!

She & Him

Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? & Sentimental Heart (live)

this is not really my thing. it's close, i like standards; i like the sounds of a simpler time, but this falls kinda flat. zooey's kinda cute in the movies, but boring as a singer.

Imogen Heap

Hide & Seek (live) & First Train Home

i've never been as into imogen heap as everyone else. i liked frou frou, but imogen doesn't move enough for me. and i get sick of the vocoder sound. AND WHAT'S WITH THE PANTS IN THE FIRST TRAIN HOME VIDEO?!?!?!

Erol Alkan

Waves (live, with boys noize) & Zero (rework of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs)

does this guy make anything of his own? i had a hard time finding it if so. i like remixes, but not an entire set of them which makes me think i wouldn't like a whole set of this guy. but he's dirty & he has energy.

The Avett Brothers

Slight Figure of Speech (live) & I'll Fly Away (live, cover)

seems like it would be better live than on album. i'm all for stand up basses and family acts :) not sure if it will get too country for me or not though.

Calle 13

Atrevete-te-te & Hormiga Brava ? (live)

though i like reggae and i like most latin music, i don't like reggaeton. this is fairly good for reggaeton, but not good enough for me to want to see it.

the Whitest Boy Alive

Burning & Golden Cage (live)

my first thoughts while listening to burning were to wonder what this would be like live. a bit simple. but i think i'd dig listening to this while i was working or something. this may be more like 2 1/2 kernels.

The Cribs

Hey Scenesters! & The Wrong Way to Be (live)

i don't get this. i know it's johnny marr and all, but i can't get into it. and while i can kind of get into Hey Scenesters!, i think this would be even more annoying live.

La Roux

Bulletproof & I'm Not You're Toy (live)

randy pants is right; bulletproof is catchy. she seems kickass & a lot of fun! i hope to check her out. i will definitely bounce around to her set.

Yeasayer

Tightrope & 2080 (live)

interesting. if i were going to kick off my shoes, refuse showers, become one with the animals & take mushrooms for days i may enjoy this. but i'm not going to be doing that so i'll probably skip this. but go on with your weird selves, boys :)

Wolfgang Gartner

Fire Power & Unknown Track (live)

this is kinda dark, which i like. seems like this might be kinda dope live. i'd check this out..

Perry Farrell vs. Steve Porter

Steve Porter - Control & DJ Peretz (AKA Perry Farrell ) - Unknown live set

i've seen perry farrell before so i know exactly how much this will suck. but thanks again for all your work with music festivals, blah blah blah. i'll stop there :)

Lucero

Nights Like These & My Best Girl

how do you have errors on your own website?! i'm not into screaming/whining bar bands, NEXT!

DJ Lance Rock

Party in my Tummy (live) & Yo Gabba Gabba - Rock (live)

kernels for creativity. this might be a strange version of the sahara to see. a bit too silly, even for me.

The Dillinger Escape Plan

Milk Lizard & Sugar Coated Sour (live)

awful, just awful. i feel sorry for anyone having to work near this tent and i will surely make food i'm not stuck in any sort of food/beer line during this nonsense. no no NO!

Proxy

Dancing in the Dark & Raven (live)

so after MUCH debate, i finally figured out that the first proxy i looked up was correct. i will definitely be here dancing my ass off. this is heavy & nasty, i like it!!!

Ra Ra Riot

Can You Tell & Oh La (live)

guy sounds like a pussy. first thing that comes to mind listening to oh la. it's not the worst thing i've ever herad, but it's not really my thing either. it's something i'd tolerate for a friend and that's about it.

Gil Scott-Heron

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised & The Bottle

i've heard the revolution will not be televised before, but didn't know anything about who was talking. after reading i'm not surprised to see at all that another strong spirit like my mother came outta tennessee in 1949. i'm interested to see what this would be like live today, but i will definitely stop by.

Deer Tick

Easy (live) & Art Isn't Real (live)

i'm not a fan of flashy websites either, deer tick. therefore i really appreciated yours. easy is pretty groovy; kinda makes me think of something my dad would listen to. i dig this. perhaps not a whole set of it, but i could see myself drinking a beer and laying in the grass to this.

Aeroplane

Now Til '69 & Unkknown Track (live)

another group where it was hard to find anything by them. it's not just the common name, aeroplane, but also the fact that i could only find remixes. that's not a good sign in my book. seems a bit too euro for me. and boring.

CéU

Grains de Beaute & Unknown (live)

took me forever just to figure out how to type her name. kinda sexy. especially watching her get down! but seems like something that would be best in an intimate setting. i like her though.

Street Sweeper Social Club

100 Little Curses & Promenade (live)

ugh, i remember these douchebags from the ninja tour. not my thing at all. and i'm not sitting through them again!

Iglu & Hartlyn

In This City & Violent and Young (live)

i read on wikipedia these guys quit school to do this shit. would you like fries with that?
