This quarter I've been taking a rather interesting class on marketing. One key aspect of marketing is building a unique, strong brand that sticks in the mind of customers.
People can "brand" themselves, too, without having to join a fraternity. Branding in this case is basically synonymous with reputation. How do get others to perceive you in the way that you want to be perceived?
Here's what got me thinking about this today: I have an economics class TTh from 1:15 to 3:05. If there is something due in class that day, I usually will complete it last minute and arrive to class an hour late.
Today, we had our final 15-page paper due. Apparently, at the beginning of class, one guy asks another, "Where do you think James is?"
The other guy replies, "Probably on page 12."
Funny thing is that he was absolutely right. I arrived to class at 2:30, right as the teacher was giving his concluding remarks, and handed in my hot-off-the-press paper. The others in the class found it pretty amusing that I came predictably late to class.
But is this the type of brand I want to create for myself? A slacker who can never get his work done on time?
I probably won't really change any time soon, but just wanted to share an interesting thought.
