so here is my weekend of morrissey goodness.

harriet and i nearly missed the 11.40 from stratford to london and when we did get on the very sweet conductor managed to charge us the wrong fare (thinking we were only going down the road to leamington instead of all the way to marlybone). but we sorted all that out and settle in for the two hour journey down accompanined by a) my smiths cd; b) a rather brightly dressed lady and her two small dogs and c) a young man who was either mad and talking to himself or an actor learning lines.

then we wandered around oxford street and spend nearly an hour in the huge (and very gorgeous) top shop. then we checked out a couple of record shops, stopped and had coffee, before walking down into westminster to check out the houses of parliament (we are politics students after all). here's the bit where we got lost. we crossed vaxhaull bridge and then couldn't find a tube station so we had to ask for directions and we ended up at waterloo. then it was a quick hop to earls court.

here we had to wait outside a decidedly rough looking pub for kevin the taxi driver who had our tickets (it was an ebay job). eventually he turned up and was in fact an ok bloke. then we wandered into ealrs court, bought some random morrissey merchandising, including a bumper sticker that i am saving for when i have passed my test, saying "i only brake for morrissey".

but the show itself... i can't descibe it. morrissey himself was amazing. it started of with a voice reading all the bad things in the world; some funny ("scouse impersenators"), some serious ("cancer... myra hindly"). then he played 'how soon is now' and it was the most amazing, cathartic experience ever. after that, all the songs were equally brilliant, especially 'first of the gang to die', 'let me kiss you' and 'there is a light'. however, i must say ending on 'last night i dreamt that somebody loved me' was genius.

i think i should also mention some of the great things morrissey said druing the gig.
on fans shouting out his name: "it's a beautiful name, but do you know where it's been..."
on the smiths: "i used to be in a band with three of the most miserable people... some great songs came out of it though" (then he played 'there is a light')
on the new song: "as you may know, we've released a charity single this week. and the charity is me."
and before the encore: "there's goodbye. and there's farewell. and this is definitely farewell." (now what's that supposed to mean?)

anyway - has to be the perfect end to a pretty damn good year. now i've said that, something terrible will happen, right? well, if it does, the year now ends on midnight december 18th.
