I'm adequately drunk right now, but I need to be certain I remember this:
Fantastic night! I couldn't think of a better alternative to the Commencement Ball.
A big part of why I think this year just wasn't as good as the others was that I didn't have any classes with the SOM guys, and moreso that they'd changed. I had SOM 499 (capstone) with Chad in the fall, but Chad's become more egotistic and just...his view of "success" is too warped for me, and I can't abide. Pat, who I thought was one of my best friends, just drifted away and became less easygoing, and I just don't know what happened. It still kinda hurts. Ben suggested that it was his girlfriend at the root of it all, but I don't know...Pat and I were solid friends for a year - why should his girlfriend care at the beginning of senior year suddenly that we were so close? Whatever. I never threatened their relationship - I just miss him still sometimes. I hope that friendship is something I can reclaim.
But Jason! Jason is my true true true friend whom I love dearly - and I mean that wholeheartedly! - whose friendship only grew with time, and I wish I had taken classes with him this year, but I did get to go on spring break with him (again). At any rate, Jason and I pooh-poohed Commencement Ball tonight and decided we could have a much better time on our own - and we did!
Let me recount:
I called him this afternoon...
Me: "What are you doing?
Jason: "I'm on a FARM!"
Me: "What the hell are you doing?! Milking cows?"
Jason: "No, no, no...I have ice cream...and milk...it's great!"
So we arranged to hang out later and went to Rafters...where we had beer and a very unwholesome but good dinner, and he admitted to me that he went to the butterfly museum place in Deerfield today, and I quote:
"It was this big place full of butterflies...and they had stickbugs...and chameleons! And there was this, I don't know, holy sort of music playing...I thought I was in heaven. I want to buy, like, a season pass or something."
I died laughing at that - and we ultimately ended up talking about summer, and future plans, and people sort of stuff, and from there we headed back to his house. Talked about the ridiculousnenss of insurance re: medical situations and with people we met in New Orleans, I tested out his burnt Jesus (don't ask), admired the beer bottle collection, and inquired about the random Life spinner on his dining room table. ("It's for Simpson's Clue.")
Caught the bus into town - went to ABC and was hesitant at first, but I can say the place has been reclaimed now that I've been there with Jason and his housemates. Had a Nice Melons, saw some chick I had an interesting situation with in the fall and laughed about it with Jason, and went over the reasons why every other guy in our group there was gay. ("You drive a Prius!" "Hey Jason, what's it like to have a guy's dick in your mouth?!")
Ran into Amanda and Sean (I think) on our way out. Wandered into Delano's, where I ran into Pavel (YES), Jas (yeeeaah), and two other very special people I know, who were very happy to see me, and it was great. Met some random guy named John, who shared his beer. And then it was off to...
...Charlie's, and from there to the Spoke, and then, after waiting forever for a bus, caught the B43 to Haigis Mall, which was good enough. And to cap it all off, Jason and I peed on SOM. That's right. Finance majors. Pissing on their alma mater. SOM was good to us, yes, but it also caused us much pain and suffering. The least we could do was leave our mark on it...right?
And now I'm home, and really pleased with how wonderful the whole night ended up. I couldn't stop smiling on our walk home.
All I know is, I never want to lose touch or friendship with Jason, and I have faith that I won't. I feel really lucky, and really grateful. :)
(And as a side note, this song makes me think I need to get back to Athens at some point this summer.)
