I've used the version with the extra question as seen on the_marquis's journal. ( I was born and brought up in... )

Nobody doing this meme has mentioned that as well as not being insects, only some species of woodlice curl up.

I think my mother has mentioned that woodlice in Essex when she was a child curled up, but personally I have never actually encountered a woodlouse that does this, so I think they must be an Eastern phenomenon.

I think all the ones I've encountered curl up, but I haven't seen any at all for a long time. When we had to get the house treated for fleas after we moved in, the stuff they used killed off all the creepy crawlies and even now over 2 years on, we only see the occasional spider.

Actually, now I think about it, I seem to remember encountering curly ones in Oxford and wondering at this strange ability!

The devon ones just hunker down in a grumpy manner or run away.

Susssex ones and Black Country ones do too.

Ah yes veranda! Never had one in the true sense but mum occasionally used it to refer to the concrete bit of garden by the house - that was never a patio as it was two beds of concrete not stone slabs.

Mmm, I wouldn't tend to call concrete a patio either. That's what we had in N'cle when I was growing up. Mum always wanted to pave it so she could have a patio :-)
