Faith in Humanity

I really like the way that the school where I work deals with students with special needs. Most of them are included in at least one class per day, and some of the ones without bad behavior problems are included in every class. One of these is a kid named Ruey.

Ruey fell down yesterday, and was on the ground crying when I found him. As could be expected in a middle school, he was surrounded by his classmates. What was completely unexpected was the fact that nobody was making fun of him. Everyone had stopped when he had fallen; none had ignored him. The two responses were, "Are you okay? Do you need a hand up?" and "C'mon guys, give him a little space!" When I asked people to get the nurse, I had three volunteers immediately. Everyone was so supportive of the poor kid that it just made me glow a little bit to be a part of the same species as these kids.
