Title: Crooked Safety
Fandom: Reverse/Mars (drama crossover)
Pairing: Asami Kosuke (Tamamori Yuta)/Kashino Rei (Fujigaya Taisuke)
Rating: R
Genre: Angst, Tragedy, Violence
Disclaimer: I own nothing but the plot

A/N: I DON'T KNOW HOW THIS HAPPENED! This is mainly the fault of ichigobanana and her ideas, but I don't know how I ended up writing something like this XD It's messy and random and probably seems incomplete, but I kinda liked it that way instead of adding more details...the rest is up to your imagination^^

Crooked Safety

A soft gasp comes first, just like Asami has predicted, just like he has hoped. He keeps his eyes steady on the young, beautiful face, on the shock in those brown orbs, so beautiful, always filled with fire and passion about life. Just that, life. Rei always acts like he has the world figured out, living the moment, ignoring the future, forgetting about the past.

It’s his time to gasp when he finally sees the pain flooding those eyes. Asami gasps, and then smiles, a shaky smile that can in no way be called happy. But it’s not sad, either. He’s still holding onto the hilt of the knife, pushing a little deeper, more than half of the blade still out.

“What about this?” he says, voice barely audible. He’s not even sure Rei can hear him over his frantic breathing pace. “What about this?” he repeats, louder this time, voice cracking in the middle. “Have you ever thought about this?”

“Asami…” Rei chokes, one hand on the young man’s wrist, tugging weakly, nails barely scratching him. Asami clenches the hilt tighter, shaking his head.

“You can’t take death lightly…what does a teacher have to do to make you understand that?” he pants, his free hand on Rei’s face, cupping his cheek, brushing away the strands that half-cover his eyes. Slowly, he pulls the knife out, drags the blade gradually, and Rei yelps, a quiet, wounded sound that Asami can’t quite comprehend. He still tingles at it.

He brings it up, close to his face, almost mesmerized by the red liquid shining on the blade. Rei is watching too, eyes wide open, still shocked to the core. Asami’s interest is drawn back to him, and he lowers his hand, moving closer, pressing him against the headboard, until Rei has nowhere to go. The younger one squirms, tries to get away, but Asami keeps him in place, pressing their foreheads together.

“You should listen…I know, I know…I treated it lightly once…it was ugly…you should have listened…”

He laughs in between his own words, laughs sourly, because his head is aching slightly, heavy with all the memories he has buried in his mind for the past years. Rei raises his hand again, pushing him back, slaps his head away with all the power he has left in him. Asami feels his skull being shoved to the right violently; the glasses slip, disappear somewhere in the sheets. Now one side is burning, and Rei tries to slip away. He slides towards the floor, and has almost succeeded in falling down from the bed, but Asami grabs him by the shirt, that lovely black and white checkered shirt he somehow finds annoyingly great on Rei.

A smile while he’s tearing him apart…that’s not really something a proper adult should do. But is he a proper adult? If he cannot teach his students the value of life, then he’s not worthy. He licks his lips impatiently, and then his slender fingers clutch the knife again tightly. He points the edge towards the fresh wound; the blood is already spreading slowly, staining the white tanktop, and Asami delves again, twisting a bit this time. His other hand is quick to cover Rei’s mouth as he jerks and writhes under the invasion, eyes glistering with pain and despair.

“Remember what you told me once?” he asks now, his own body shaking too, overwhelmed with all the emotions. “That you’re joking, like you do with everyone, because jokes are just that, and they won’t kill anyone, anyway…”

He can still hear Rei’s sounds, muffled by his hand. The latter leans, wincing at the pain, tugging onto Asami’s clothes, clinging onto him, wheezing sounds emitting from his body as he’s trying to breathe. Asami shakes his head, his eyes burning a bit now; are those tears?

Pushing the knife even deeper has Rei even more paranoid; his grip on Asami’s sleeve gets tighter, and Asami pulls him against his own body, his hand and the knife being the only obstacle between them. He withdraws his other hand from his mouth and presses his lips right next to Rei’s, his breaths short and messy.

“I didn’t want to do this…”

Rei lifts his head, peering up at him, lips half-parted. “How…”

Asami shakes his head, swallowing hard. He can feel the blood on his fingers now and he turns it once more, burying it up to the hilt. Rei chokes again, looking down between them, on Asami’s blood-stained fingers that just can’t let go of the knife. How, indeed…

“Do you even care about anything other than sleeping in class and breaking rules?”

“I care about my bike.” Rei shrugged, and when he saw the way he was being looked at, he chuckled. “Come on now, it was a joke! No one died by it!”

~~~
“Are you gonna walk me home, too?”
“I’m just going towards the same direction.” Asami rolled his eyes. “Does that bother you, too?”
“No, I guess not.” Rei shrugged with a carefree expression. “If you know how to cook too, then feel free to drop by anytime you want.”
“You really couldn’t care less about the teachers, right?”
“Now that’s something we agree on.”
~~~

“I thought you weren’t interested.”

“Not as long as you’re a teacher.” Rei nodded in agreement, eyes filled with anticipation, curiosity, and maybe something else. Asami didn’t really realize why he was being pulled to a random street corner and why he was being stared at like this. “But outside those walls, you are not a teacher. Not my teacher.”

“You need to stop thinking like everything is a game.” Asami protested, a little weakly, his grip on Rei’s wrist a little unstable. The younger one pursed his lips.

“I’ve heard them all before. Don’t make yourself safe and boring. Don’t be like the others.”

Safe…that’s how he chose to live. Asami felt cornered, pissed, and wronged, all 3 at the same time. Rei didn’t know, and yet he acted like he did. Safe was his only option at this point, after he screwed up beyond return the one time he decided to drop all of his maturity.

“Stop assuming things like that.” He let out, as calmly as he could, trying to hide the storm in his voice. “One day, it will cost you.”

Rei just raised an eyebrow in amusement, then laughed. “Yeah, sure. What are you gonna do, spank me?”

~~~
“You were tossing and turning in your sleep.”
Asami flinched. “It happens occasionally. It’s nothing.”
Rei just turned his back on him with a hum of approval. He didn’t sound convinced, not at all. “If you say so.”
Was he the fool for actually expecting him to insist on finding out?
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
The person in the mirror is not him. That’s what he thinks at first. No glasses, small red stains here and there…the hand holding the knife is tremoring, but somehow he still won’t drop it.
Slowly, he turns his head towards the bed. Rei is lying on his side, the blood still running, smearing his clothes. He looks paler now, eyes barely open, one hand half-hanging from the bed. Their gazes meet for a moment, just a single second, and then Asami looks back at the mirror.
Tears. There are tears as well. And a shaky, lopsided smile.
“Don’t worry. It will be part of the past soon, like everything else.” He whispers, and he’s not sure anymore whether he’s trying to comfort himself, or Rei, or both of them. “I’ll take care of it…like before…like that time…”
“A…sa…”
The last syllable never comes out. Asami looks at him once more with a sniffle, before he lets out a strangled sound; something between laughing and sobbing, or maybe both together. He approaches the bed again, dropping to his knees, caressing the cheekbone with his crimson-painted knuckles. He stares a little more, one finger running down to Rei’s lips, before it is pulled away.
Taking a deep breath, he’s up on his feet again, heading towards the sink. Cover up, stay safe, don’t ruin your life, your career, your dreams. Cover up, stay safe, don’t ruin your life, your career, your dreams. Cover up, stay safe, don’t ruin your life, your career, your dreams. Cover up…
