Second Chances

Is he dying?

The blood still feels warm wherever he can feel it running from his open wounds. The sound of crawling stopped a while ago already, and even with his eyes half-open, the ceiling is nothing but a blur. How long has it been? Dawn will arrive soon…

He should be dying, Noeru concludes, because he’s made peace with the pain already, or maybe he stopped feeling. The dizziness, it doesn’t surprise him either with all the blood and his energy loss. Ryohei made sure he drained him of his magic too, before leaving the room. Before all his reptiles left the room, too.

But his ears catch a sound, finally, a different sound, the soft, familiar hissing that sounds like heavy breathing of a sick human. Is it possible? He thought he had lost everything already…

He blinks, once and then twice and then he’s moving his head, turning to the side, because he has to know. And another sound reaches him, a soft gasp, before fingers are in his hair.

“Don’t strain yourself, please? He was in a much worse condition so we had to take care of him first, but you’ll be ok, too, Noeru. You’ll be fine, ok? Just hold on a little longer…”

Genta?

He knows he’s mouthing the word, the name is the only thing that doesn’t taste like blood right now, but the one in his view isn’t Genta. No, that boy looks a little like Genta, sitting cross legged on the floor next to him, and there’s one…no, two…

There’s a small blue snake on the boy’s shoulder, probably shorter than Noeru’s arm, even. But it’s glowing, the scales sparkling like sapphires, and it’s resting comfortably, barely moving its head. And Noeru’s snake is in the boy’s hands, small blue sparkles covering his skin, his wounds.

A healer? The Blues do have many healers, but the snake…

Finally Genta comes into Noeru’s view as well, still stroking his hair. “I met him a few days ago, Noeru, he’s…he’s like you, you know? He can heal, but he’s like you, too…it’s so rare to find someone like you…”

Yes, so rare. All this time, they thought it was just him and Ryohei, the ones to lure and control and be friendly with the reptiles. But this boy…

“His name is Nasu Yuto.” Genta continues, his voice breaking here and there, and Nasu nods, a very faint, very hesitant smile forming on his face. “He’ll be done with your snake soon, and then he’ll heal your wounds, ok? Ryohei may have taken your magic away, but I can’t let you die…so please, hold on just a little longer…”

A little longer? A little longer and then he won’t be dying anymore? He really jumped in this fight ready to die, never thought he’d be given another chance after Ryohei was done with him. But if he’s healed…

“…the Whites…” he whispers, a shaky hand reaching out to tug on Genta’s clothes weakly, and the younger one leans closer, shaking his head. “The Whites, Genta, he…he still has them…”

“The others will take care of that.” Genta replies stubbornly, and it makes something hurt inside Noeru, but maybe not in a bad way. Maybe. “You can’t save anyone if you die, you idiot…”

“I’m done.” Nasu interrupts them softly, and the snake is already slithering from his hands, already crawling and curling around Noeru, strong and healthy and soothing. He hasn’t lost everything, after all, has he? “Can I take care of you now?”

He jumped in this fight for the sake of the others. He still has a chance. He can’t screw it up. Even without his magic.

“Go ahead.” He whispers, closing his eyes and surrendering.
