At the town meeting, I talked a bit about organizing some kind of training camp. Glad to hear that someone else a little more teacherly-sounding had the same idea.

[A broken Slayer isn't much of an instructor, after all.]

There are still limits to what I can teach. If you've other skills, they would be valuable.

[Because the idea of having lives riding on his teaching abilities alone isn't pleasant.]

I do have some other skills, and a little bit of teaching experience. Just a teensy bit, though--[she hesitates. Buffy initiates a filter...after the reaction from a few choice people about her bold investigation move earlier in the day, she wants to avoid any more cautionary words.]

I'd love to be involved, if you'll have me. I've got experience in hand-to-hand--a couple of martial arts, and with a hodge-podge of weapons.

There are more who need to learn than I can manage on my own, though I do not know if they will show interest. At the least, I will contact you if anything comes of this.

Right. Gotcha. [Then, a little more sympathetically (albeit awkwardly), she offers an apology to the man she only briefly knew before he was sent home:] Sorry they dragged you back.

[He hesitates - pretending not to know things that you do is much easier than pretending to know things you don't. But, no. Maybe for now it's best not to mention it unless he has to.] It cannot be helped. Forgive me, I don't remember your name.

That's...fine. We never talked that much and, really, I--[she was going to say something about how she knows what this place is like--after all, Spike certainly didn't remember being here before]--I'm Buffy. Buffy Summers.

Indeed.

Just--ah--one question. This swordsmanship thing, just what kind of stuff are we talking, here?

[The kind of stuff that makes him a world renowned hero, that's what. Except these people don't know this. Right.] I am best with a shortsword and shield, and have some personal techniques. [Like jumping 12' into the air and landing on the enemy sword-point first. That one.] I don't intend to teach more than the basics of self defense. There will not be time.

[Shield? Wow. There's a new one, for her. She has never been so conscientious.]

You intend to train people up before the next draft, I guess?

[Conscientious? He uses it to break faces.]

I have trained from childhood. It would take a decade to pass on my knowledge.

[Child soldier? That explains some of the chill, she supposes.]

More experienced folks might be able to benefit, though. More than just in self-defence. I've used swords and axes and hammers and--weirdly enough--picket fences. But never a shield.

Likely. But my main concern is that everyone be capable of defending themselves, and not merely due to the conscription.

[This is the pause of a man thinking so hard he will probably get a headache. He could offer to teach anyone, yes... but if he taught anyone who could learn from him, he wouldn't have time for anything else, and that's... entirely too much time with other people.]

I would be willing to give lessons with a shield in exchange for your aid.
