Underkoffler's Overviews: the Indie Community & the Indie Roundtable

Mar 01, 2009 18:23

This Overview is going to be another off-model one (hopefully the last such one, for awhile) for a couple reasons:

1. Talking about the "Community" is fraught.

2. Face-time is key in these situations.

the Indie Community & Roundtable
Written by Many, MANY Different People

Website: [ Maybe Story-Games.com, IDK ]
Reviews: [ See above. ]

The Negative
  • General Support for New Games: It really doesn't matter whatever you spitball, someone in the community will love it.
  • Petting vs. Smacking: Editors/reviewers are often TOO KIND to people publishing in this community.

The Positive
  • Indie Game Producers are INTENSE: These people love gaming... prep yourself for an intense wave of attention and focus, cutting out all vagaries of your soul.
  • General Support for New Games: It really doesn't matter whatever you spitball, someone in the community will love it.
  • Secrets: Folks in the indie scene have often been privy to design attempts and restructurings that the public knows little about.
  • Lessons Learned: Indie scene people are often VERY happy to share their knowledge on all aspects of a game -- design, play, playtest, editing, marketing, reception, etc.

The Verdict
  • NONE: Some comments are awesome, some suck beyond imagination. What is important for the artist/game designer is to sieve the gold from the dross. Lots of ideas will strike you during the Indie Roundtable. However, it is up to you to accept and incorporate such messages.

  • I really dig participating in the Roundtable. Trying to set benchmarks for PCs is a daunting task. Alos, how much of what is said during the Roundtable is objective vs. subjective.

Ultimately, the quality of scenario, available play area, GMs, and co-players will really affect the overall quality of experience.

    Check it out.
