My mom was diagnosed last week with the early stages of Alzheimer's. It wasn't a surprise to me or my two brothers, as we have seen her having more memory problems in the past 18 months or so. Everything was made worse when she fell in July and broke her shoulder. The replacement surgery and anesthesia played a big roll in her increasing memory issues, but now we have a diagnosis.
She's going to be 82 in December.
We're trying to get her into a clinical drug trial that is showing some promising early results. I'm in the process of taking her for the screenings and tests (I'm her Power of Attorney and Healthcare Advocate).
Luckily, my brothers and their families all live in the same town as Mom, and I'm about 20 minutes away, so we are all supporting each other.
But it is hard already, and I can't even imagine how hard it's going to get.
Oy.
