So my mom and her SO Dave were returning from a 9 day trip to Israel. Flight was due into NY at 6am today, then they would stay with Dave's daughter on Long Island for a couple of days and return here to Florida on Sunday. I knew they would be tired, so didn't expect to hear from them until later today.
At 11:30 I get a call from Dave's daughter. It seems my mom got up during the overnight flight (where the cabin lights are off) to go to the bathroom. Some idiot had his feet in the aisle, and she tripped over them. She has a broken shoulder and it requires surgery, but she can travel home to FL and have it here (MUCH better option since my brothers and I and our families all live here too, and all in the same 2 towns). Thankfully it happened on the flight HOME and not the flight TO Israel. That would have been even worse!
SO, I spent the morning rearranging their flights, figuring out who could pick them up (since the car service guy I was using for the Sunday pickup couldn't do it tomorrow), running down the hall from my office to mom's doctor to get a referral for an orthopedist, then finding out I can't get one till Monday. Then I called the orthopedist, and can't get her in until TUESDAY anyway. WHAT PART OF 'SHE NEEDS SURGERY' DON'T THEY GET?????
So now my brother is picking her up and dropping her at my house, since she can't stay alone. She thinks she can, but I'll bet she won't even be able to get out of bed unaided. She is in an immobilizing sling (just like Brian after the Liberty Ride) but luckily not in too much pain so far.
Oh, and my brother, his wife and son and daughter-in-law are leaving Saturday for an Alaskan cruise. He's wondering if he should cancel the trip. I say no, since the earliest she will have surgery is probably Thursday and it doesn't make sense for them to sit around for the week. Oy.
The most aggravating part? My two brothers (both older) have no qualms about giving me directions on who to call and what to take care of. When did their dialing fingers break???? Guess this is why mom made ME her Healthcare Advocate and Power of Attorney. She says there's nothing like a daughter :-) All I want is a little bit of help.
She's 81, and from what I've been reading she will probably not get 100% mobility back. Rehab seems better than a broken hip at least: 1-2 weeks in a facility, then home and more PT. At least she is in good health otherwise.
Thank God she has a very good long term care policy, so I know we'll be able to get her home health care too.
Sorry for the long rant. It just hasn't been a good day.....
