after years your words returned to you
and around you the clouds broke
and somewhere without you
cars rushed along their interstates
and busboys cleared the dinner plates of
wealthy men who, by day, faxed memos to
japan, where electric lights hummed in tune
to the humming of a lonely man
in a crowded room
and a dial tone in india
and a dial tone in kansas
a receiver dangling from its hook
a pendulum that took the same time
to swing from here to there
as it takes for me to remember everything, and that
all i wanted to say, in my awkward rambling, was
what would the world be without you?
and what you've said to me:
