so here is a paper i had to bang out this morningbefore school, i dont know how i feel about it, it makes sense to me, but i have a feeling it only makes sense to me. which could be a problem because i dont really site anything as evidence. im not too worried about it though i mean, my teacher is sort of retarded and self admitted at that, so i cant imagine she will be too hard on me.
Loss of Self-Worth and “Civic Virtues”
There are many flaws that plague the people of or society and have been plaguing our society for years, these will continue for years to come. These flaws such as the seven deadly sins for example, are the most common, yet are superficial in comparison to what I believe is the cause of all these things, loss of self-worth and commitment to “civic virtue”. There is a reason why “the golden rule” can be called “the golden rule”, because if everyone were “to treat others the way you’d like to be treated.” then the world would turn as a fair and understanding place, as a golden society. This all feeds into the idea of giving back to your society or in other words “civic virtue”.
Many great philosophers and political scientist have referred to “civic duties” as being a staple of any society that wishes to succeed and have a long and prosperous existence. Most people who understand what “civic duties” are would understand why it is important and how it obviously lacks from today’s society. In fact I am willing to wager that if I was to ask people at random what they thought it meant to uphold their “civic duties”; most would be unable to answer, for most people would not understand what I was talking about. Rightfully so, it is not their fault, it is something that is considered too standard or unimportant to be taught to people in this day and age. Instead of teaching the idea of giving, we teach and promote a system that is all about taking, Capitalism.
We take for granted how much is taught to us without ever having had to listen or discuss such issues. As small children we learn things from our parent’s actions, which they do not even realize they are teaching to us. For example everyday your parents get up to go to work, you would rather they spend time with you teaching you and talking to you, but they explain that they need to go to work to put food on the table. That is the way most children learn how they will be spending the rest of their lives, working.
In the system we have devised for ourselves it is mandatory for survival that everyone works very hard and is very efficient, but it is not mandatory that a parent spends (x) amount of time with their child teaching them and giving them the love and care they need during their development. With absence of love and care, you have raised nothing more than someone who understands what they need to do, work everyday and make more money. You have raised a obedient working citizen, who will be spending their life working to buy materials that are sucking up the world’s resources. Your grown child will not understand what it means to give back to society, to give to those around them, to complete “civic duties”, because they are raised in such a selfish manner, where more is better. Who is to say it really is that selfish considered we are all submerged in it, no one is to tell what is right from wrong anymore.
Until, this respect for community and for the common mans needs is regained, then there will not be too much progress in aiding to, or reshaping the flaws of mankind. The criminals will keep on committing crimes as a way to work the system. The poverty stricken families will for the most part remain in poverty, unless they get some accidental break. The rich will keep getting richer off of those who are stupid enough to follow. The hard working citizens, with the poor sense of community, will blindly continue on their pursuit of happiness, which can be summed up in the terms of dollar signs. On the other hand they will continue to raise their children the way they were raised, only teaching them to be more efficient than the last generation and forgetting to teach them what it means to give. Not to give money but to give the gift of the mind and understanding, to understand their “civic virtues”.
moral to my story go out and walk some opld ladies across the street, make sure you smile while you do it. then enlist in the army.
