Smurf ? Well that's funny =D
It's "Schtroumph" in the original. (French) The two authors were having a lunch, and they were looking for a name. One of them, forgetting the word for "salt", said "Give me the... the... the shtroumph".
Great idea anyway.

It's funny... we were just talking about that yesterday, whether they came out originally in French or in English, and we figured it had to be French based on the name alone.

French Exec: We have this show called Les SCREW-tomphs.
English Exec: ...let's call them Smurfs.
