Some teacher in high school had taught them about body languages and the way other people interpreted it. She had said that crossed or folded arms were like a shield that blocked the outside world from getting to know you. This piece of knowledge had helped him get through high school alone. He had never made any friends or gone out with anyone on a date.
It wasn’t because he wasn’t popular. On the contrary, he was very popular. Especially after that one photo-shoot his classmates had forced him to do. The school had a competition and every class had to pick one girl and one guy, who would have their photos taken. And because they photos weren’t pair shots and just single shot, no one was interested. The boys had chosen him, and he didn’t even remember who the girl was. He had gone to the Photography Club, and posed exactly how they wanted (in his white uniform shirt, unbuttoned to reveal his chest, with his hair a bit messed up, and holding a pair of glasses in his hands- he didn’t even wear glasses- sitting on the floor of a dark classroom where the only light came from the moon through a slightly open window, the gentle moonlight on his hair, giving him a mysterious and lonely aura). After the photos were developed and put up for the competition, suddenly everything changed. Girls screamed whenever they saw him, fighting for his attention every day. Some guys avoided him like a plague, while other guys flocked to him.
He just wanted to go back to how it all was. He liked, enjoyed being alone- alone with only his thoughts and his DS for company. He didn’t want to talk to the girls- they were annoying, shrill voices screaming like banshees. He didn’t want to talk to the guys either- half of them were plain stupid, while the other half…… Who cares? Sometimes he didn’t even have a reason why he didn’t want to mingle with other people. He was just not very sociable.
For the past 2-3 years, he had avoided making friends. He sat in his seat with his arms crossed, and his legs too (the teacher said it added to the STAY AWAY FROM ME message) and slowly everything quieted down. But the habit stayed. He was in college now, and still sat in the cafeteria, alone in a corner, arms folded across his chest, legs crossed and added a scowl to his face. And no one had dared to come speak to him since he’d started coming to college last month. He was in the cafeteria again today. His class was boring and he had left half way through.
Suddenly there was a flash of blue and a smiling face appeared in front of eyes. He jerked back, startled. The owner of the face with the stupid smile started stammering, “Ah…you…you are…ah…you’re that!!”
He shut up, only to put his hands into his backpack and pull out an old magazine. It was his high school magazine. WOW, he hadn’t seen that for a long time! The boy (he had a cute, chubby face with blond hair) was talking- ah, stammering- again, pointing to an open page in the magazine. “You’re him!!” he said, pointing to an old photo from a photo-shoot he had wanted to forget about since high school.
He jumped up from his chair, pushing the other boy aside. He grabbed his own backpack and stormed out of the cafeteria. He never wanted to see that picture again, never wanted to be reminded of those times!! But the stupid, smiling idiot wouldn’t leave him alone. He just kept following him.
“Hey!! Wait! I’m sorry. What’s wrong?”
He turned around, furious, “WHAT’S WRONG?” “Are you kidding me? I hate that magazine, that photo! That one photo that changed all the people around me.”
He couldn’t stop himself. Everything that was stored up inside himself, flowed out of his mouth, like water gushing out of a broken dam. He didn’t care that he was in the middle of the hallway, shouting at the top of voice, at a person he had just meet, nor did he care that everyone around them were staring at them.
“That one photo-shoot changed everyone and everything! Imagine people whom you’ve been with for years suddenly looking at you differently. And, people you don’t even know talking to you, confessing their undying love to you…all because of one picture!! Is that all I was for them? A picture perfect guy?”
“They didn’t even know who I was. None of them knew the real me, neither before nor after that competition. They just imagined I’d be whatever they wanted me to be.” He was breathing hard now. His eyes were stinging with unshed tears. But he would never let them fall. Not in public, in front of some random guy, nor would he shed tears in private because he was strong. Strong enough to…..
“Some claiming to love me and some openly hating me…why?” He didn’t realize that his voice was shaking, and his hands were trembling just like his lips were, until he suddenly felt a hand grab his and pull him towards the door, away from the eyes of all those staring students.
“What are you do----”
“Oh! Just shut up!” The other man was pulling him along. “I didn’t want to make you feel bad or make you cry. I was just happy…….just….just wait till we get outside and then we can continue.”
In less than two minutes they were in the underground parking lot of their college. It was mostly used only by the faculty so there was nobody around at this time of day.
Taking a deep breath, the man who was smiling earlier but now had a serious expression on his face, started again, “I did not mean to make you cry! I am so sorry!”
“Whatever! I don’t know you! And you don’t know me!! So leave me alone! I’m going back in----”
“No! You listen to me! I want you to hear me out!” “I do know you! We actually went to the same school. I was your senpai.”
“I’ve known you for a long time, even before the stupid competition. You were always quiet, not talking to anyone, but….I know it's not because you’re a bad person. You’re just not very good with people.”
The other guy was looking at him. He was looking at him. Not at somebody he had made up in his mind, but at his real self. His pretty eyes were smiling at him.
“I know that even though your looks are worth a million dollars, you don’t even realize that.” Now, that was making him blush.
“I know that when you read a book in the library alone, you tilt your head a little and your bite your thumb nail.” Wow, that was embarrassing. He didn’t even realize he was being watched so closely.
“I know that your eyebrows come together when you frown over a game you’re playing, and that it makes you look even cuter.” OMG! Did this guy say he looked cut when he frowned?
“And I know that even though you don’t talk to people and keep them at distance, you really do care about them.” He looked up at the other, to see if he was real, or if this was just a dream.
“And, most of all, I know that every time I saw you sitting on the school rooftop, alone, smiling at the wind, and at the thoughts in your head only you knew about……every time I saw you, after school, lying under the bridge on your way home, with the sun on your face….I fell in love more…and more.”
He clamped his hand down on his mouth, barely stopping the surprised gasp from escaping his lips. He couldn’t believe it!
“I don’t know how to make you believe in what I’m saying. But I just want to tell you- the reason I love you is not because you are the most beautiful man I’ve even seen nor is it because you won the damn competition in high school”-the man was blushing a deep red now. “I would love you even if you did not have those looks. As long as you are you, and smile that smile, I will always love you.”
And this is how Ohno Satoshi confessed his love to Ninomiya Kazunari.
Well, Nino did not start going out with him immediately. It took him some time to open up to his new friend. Ohno hung around him all the time, talking to him and sometimes just sitting next to him. In a couple of months, he even lost his habit of sitting at the cafeteria with his arms crossed.
And now, several months later, Nino and Ohno take the same classes at college, text each other, and go out on dates whenever they get time. Nino smiles a lot more now and Ohno is happy as long as his boyfriend keeps smiling!
A/N: I hope you liked this fic. Wrote one after so long. The whole story started because I read an article on body language ^________^ I am like Nino who sits at the cafeteria with his arms crossed, I do that a lot because I don't like talking to people lol...not a very good reason like Nino's in the story!!
It was a bit hard not to mention any names until the end of the story...I just wanted to specify "I'm writing about Nino here!!!"
Please do leave comments!! I love reading them ♥
